The United States and the Soviet Union agreed to spilt Korea in half.
The US and SU agreed to spilt the country of Korea in half because they wanted to disarm the Japanese army as fast as they could. The US believed that it was a temporary fix. However the Soviets had a different plan. They had a short rain of terror in Northern Korea. -
Truman Doctrine
Current U.S President Harry S. Truman presents his "Truman Doctrine," pledging American aid and assistance to any nation that is threatened by Communist rule. -
Independent South Korea
Southern communist didn’t agree with the split of the country. They rebelled and a war was fought in every part of South Korea. The fighting grew to the ROKA and the KPA. The North wanted to stop the fighting and they launched 10 cross-border guerilla incursions in an effort to get the ROKA to give up the fight. -
North Korea invaded the South
This was the conflict between the Democratic Republic of North Korea and the republic of South Korea. The north was supplied by the Soviet Union and was joined by the People's Republic of China. The United Nations and the United States joined the war with the South Koreans. About 2.5 million people died including more then a million casualties that had been suffered by both the North and the South. -
Truman Authorized Advance
Truman tells General MacArthur to advance past the 38th parallel after they regain southern land. He tells him to stop if they run into Chinese or Soviet troops. He didn't want to have direct conflict with either army because he feared it would start another world war; sending the world into another world war. -
Stalemate
In July 1951, with the arrival of the strong Canadian brigade, the British, Australian, New Zealand and Indian units were formed into the 1st Commonwealth Division, which soon gained an enviable reputation among its allies. -
Peaceful Negotiations Begin
Stalin died and the Soviets were ready for peace. China and Korea didn’t want to continue a war without the support of their biggest military influence. The countries were ready to come to an agreement to end the war. -
The fighting ends
A ceasefire stopped the fighting in July. However, Korea was still divided into two hostile states after the war was over. No other agreements were produced to make negotiations with the other side. There is still the boundary that separates North Korea (communist) and South Korea (non-communist). -
Korean War Armistice
Diplomats from the U.S., North Korea, and China come to an agreement without an official treaty. The country is to be divided on the 38th parallel (line of latitude). And neither side claims victory or defeat. -
Geneva Talks Fail
U.S and Chinese representatives gather to come to peace on Korean war but fail to do so. The war continues with no end in sight.
