Kite Runner & the History of Afghanistan

  • The Rape (Quote)

    After witnessing Hassan's rape, Amir "... ran because I was a coward. I was afraid of Assef and what he would do to me" (Hosseini 77). Amir had a choice to make. He could either attempt to save his friend, or watch his friend be sexually abused. He ended up choosing not to help Hassan even though Hassan would do anything for him.
  • The Aftermath (Quote)

    After the rape, Amir made sure that him and Hassan's "... paths crossed as little as possible" (Hosseini 88). Amir didn't want to be around Hassan after the rape. He felt guilty and whenever he was with Hassan, it made it even worse.
  • Start of the Suffering (Quote)

    As the bombs go off, Amir knows that "... they were foreign sounds to us" (Hosseini 36). No one in Afghanistan knew what was going on. Little did they know, this was the beginning of a long time of war.

    As the rebellion comes to an end, "Daud's government is overthrown (and he and most of his family killed) by a lef-wing faction within the army." (BBC News).
  • Soviet Coup d'etat(Quote)

    As the bombs were being deployed, Amir narrates' "The end, the official end, would come first in April 1978 with the communist coup d'etat" (Hasseini 36). This is the point in the book where the communists take over Afghanistan. This is when the Afghans struggles begin.
  • Soviet Occupation

    After General Daud is overthrown, "Soviet Army invades and props up communist government" (BBC News).
  • Afghans are Independent People (Quote)

    Looking back on their situation, Amir said, "... what the Russians would eventually learn by the late 1980's: that Afghans are an independent people" (Hasseini 52). This is a clear example of foreshadowing. The Russians do learn that the Afghans are tough people and Amir is just stating it.
  • The Escape (Quote)

    Amir's "innards had been rolling ever since we left Kabul at two in the morning" (Hosseini 110). Getting up at two in the morning is very unusual. They did this because they were trying to get out of Afghanistan ilegally.
  • Alliance against Soveits

    As the Soviets place themselves in Afghanistan' " Mujahideen come together in Pakistan to form alliance against Soviet forces" (BBC News).
  • Baba's Cancer (Quote)

    When Amir and Baba come home from the hospital, Amir says to Baba "I wish you'd give the chemo a chance" (Hosseini 156). At this point in the story, Baba is diagnosed with cancer. Being a proud Afghan, he constantly denies chemo.
  • U.S. gets involved

    As the rebellion drones on, " US begins supplying mujahideen with Stinger missiles, enabling them to shoot down Soviet helicopter gunships" (BBC News).
  • Soviets Are Gone

    The war is still going but, "Last Soviet troops leave, but civil war continues as mujahideen push to overthrow Najibullah" (BBC News).
  • U.S. Missile Strike

    The, "US launches missile strikes at suspected bases of militant Osama bin Laden, accused of bombing US embassies in Africa" (BBC News).
  • Get Him (Quote)

    As Amir speaks to Rahim Kahn about Hassan, Rahim Kahn says "I want you to go to Kabul. I want you to bring Sohrab here" (Hosseini 220). Rahim Kahn sort of manipulated Amir. He told him to come visit, but then he sends him off on a wild goose chase.
  • The Stadium (Quote)

    On their way to get Sohrab, Farid and Amir had to make a stop and "A bustling crowd was filling Ghazi Stadium when we walked through the entrance tunnels" (Hosseini 267). The person who had Hassan was somewhere in the stadium. To find Sohrab, they needed to make a deal with the person that had Sohrab.
  • The Slinger (Quote)

    As Sohrab slung the brass ball at Assef, Assef "Rolled side to side, shrieking, his hand still cupped over the bloody socket" (Hosseini 291). Sohrab decided to help Amir even though he had no idea who Amir was. It was a good thing that Sohrab intervened, or else Amir would've died.
  • The Brawl (Quote)

    During his brawl with Assef, Amir knows “My body was broken—just how badly I wouldn’t find out until later—but I felt healed. Healed at last. I laughed" (Hosseini 289). This was the way in which Amir was atoning for his sins. He was relieving himself of all of his guilt.
  • The Attempted Suicide (Quote)

    As Amir opened the bathroom door, he started "Screaming with my clenched teeth. Screaming until I thought my throat would rip and my chest explode" (Hosseini 343). Sohrab had just attempted suicide. He was in the bathroom for a long time, and when Amir walked in, all he saw was a bathtub full of blood.
  • Opposition to Taliban is Leaderless

    This man, "Ahmad Shah Masood, leader of the main opposition to the Taliban - the Northern Alliance - is assassinated" (BBC News).
  • Remembrance (Quote)

    As Amir is trying to remember his past, he "... thought of the life he had lived until the winter of 1975" (Hosseini 2). This is an example of foreshadowing. Amir must of done something bad or he must have had something bad done onto him in the winter of 1975.
  • Sohrab in America (Quote)

    As Amir narrates the story, he says Sohrab "... didn't so much live with us as occupy space" (Hosseini 361). Sohrab was very quiet in America. He didn't talk much and he never seemed happy.
  • Afghans Vote

    History is made when, "Afghans vote in first parliamentary elections in more than 30 years" (BBC News).
  • Suicide Attack

    In Afghanistan, "An Al-Qaeda double agent kills seven CIA agents in a suicide attack on a US base in Khost" (BBC News).
  • Afghan Army in Control

    Near the end of NATO's existence in Afghanistan, the "Afghan army takes command of all military and security operations from Nato forces" (BBC News).
  • Final Year of Peace (Quote)

    Upon recalling his thirteenth birthday, Amir remembers, "... 1976 Afghanistan's next to last summer of peace and anonymity" (Hasseini 93). Amir is referring to the fact that the Afghanistan's struggles began in 1976. It was a hard time for that country.
