After Amir had cut down the last kite and become victor, he looked up to see,"Baba on that roof, proud of me at last," (Hosseini 66). This shows that he never entered the tournament to win, he just wanted to make Baba proud and that it had been constantly on his mind. -
Look of the Lamb
After Assef corners Hassan in an alley, "He unzipped his jeans. Dropped his underwear. He positioned himself behind Hassan," (Hosseini 75). Even while he is being violated, Hassan stays determined and calm. This was a show as force striking fear into both Hassan and Amir. -
Ali and Hassan Quit
As Hassan allowed himself to be blamed for stealing, Amir realized, "This was Hassans's final sacrifice to me," (Hosseini 105). Hassan is so loyal and forgiving that he took responsibility for stealing Amirs watch when really Amir hated himself for not helping Amir. -
Amir suggests new servants
When Amir brings up the topic of new servants,"My father took him in, he loved Ali like his own son. Forty years hes been with my family,"then adds,"And Hassan . . . Hassan's not going anywhere...," (Hosseini 91). Babas anger illistrates how deeply he cares for Ali and Hassan, and how they are part of the family. -

The Russian officer
While trading insults with a Russian officer, "Tell him I'll take a thousand bullets before I let this indecencly take place," (Hosseini 116). Baba's bravery shows how much he values respect and holding ones end of the bargain. -
Amir becomes a man
After Baba uses the rest of his money on his sons graduation present,"'I took the keys, stunned. I looked from him to the car.' 'You'll need to go to college,'"(Hosseini 132). Sending Amir with a gift, shows that Baba has changed and that he wants Amir to follow his dreams. -
Baba and Amir in America
When Mrs. Nguyen is about to call the police, "Please, Mrs. Nguyen, don't call the police. I'll take him home," (Hosseini 128). Since Baba moved to America, he lost everything an the only thing he has left is his dignity. So Amir has taken responsiblity for him, showing how Amir has the power. -
Soviet Troops leave Afghanistan
The United Nation organized peace nagotioations, and eventually, "the last Soviet troops left Afghanistan," (NYT, 3). -
Destruction of the Buddha Statues
The Al Queda persueded Mullah Omar to destroy the Bamiyan Buddha statues, which is, "an act condemned around the world," (NYT, 3). -
Amir gets married
After Amir is engaged, "Amir jan, as for you, iI welcome you to our home as our son, as the husband of our daughter and the noor of my eye,"(Hosseini, 168). Amir has finally done something for himself that he loves and he now is the man of his family. -
Hassans Death
After Hassan refused to leave his house, the Taliban ordered, "him to kneel-" "No, God No" "-and shot him in the back of the head," (Hosseini 219). Hassans death propells Amir into finding Hassans son and bringing him back to America showung the Amir cared deeply for Hassan. -
The Taliban Takeover
Waht started as a student movement to better the country, the Taliban, "promise of restoring the cenrtality of Islam to daily life, he created a genuinly popular movement in a country weary of corruption and brutality,"(NYT, 2) -
Taliban Set new Laws
Safegaurded by neibhoring countries, the Taliban start, "imposing strict enforcement of fundamentalist Islamic law, banning movies and music and forcing women out of schools," (NYT, 3) -
Baba Dies
People from far and wide came to see Baba and for the first time in Amirs life, "Baba couldn't show me the way anymore; i'd have to find it on my own. The thought terrified me," (Hosseini 174). For the first time in his life Amir misses Baba. He always showed him the way, but now he must make the decisions. -
Sohrab tries commits suicide
As Amir came to tell Sohrab that hes going to America," I pushed the door open. Stepped into the bathroom. Suddently I was on my knees screaming." As the parimedics came, "Later, they say I was still screaming when the ambulnce arrived," (Hosseini 343). Amir had gone through so much to save Sohrab and cared deeply for him. Not only were they almost free of the Taliban, but they are family. -
Amirs Brother
As Rahim Khan tells Amir that Hassan is his brother, "How could you hide this from me? From him?" Rahim quickly says, "Please think, Amir jan. It was a shamefull situation," (Hosseini 223). Amir attacks with so much hate because he not only ostricized his best friend, but his brother. Also this shows that Baba, even while dying valued respect to much to let Hassan know who his father was. -
Sohrab Saves Amir
While Amir is being beaten by Assef, "The slingshot made a thwiiiiit sound when Sohrab released the cup. Then Assef was sceraming," ( Hosseini 291). Like father like son, the slingshot travels from Hassan to Sohrab acting as a symbol of hope and protection for Amir. -
Amir Faces Assef
As Amir is being beaten by Assef he starts to laugh, "What was so funny was that, for the first time since the winter of 1975, I felt at peace," (Hosseini 288). This shows that Amir finally believes he is doing the right thing , trying to atone for his actions. -
Attack on the Taliban
The Alliance drove the Taliban, "to Tora Bora in the mountains along the Pakistan Border and eventually escaped," (NYT, 3). -
9/11 Attack
After the attack, "the United States joined forces with rebel groups, which had never accepted the Talibans rule, notably, the Northern Alliance," (NYT, 3) -
Taliban Resurgence
Although under defeated and losing men, "the Taliban redrouped and began to extend its influence in the southern part of Afghanistan," (NYT, 3). -
Amir's Redemption
As Amir watches a Kite fly high above, Sohrab askshim if he can have it,"For a thousand times over,"(Hosseini 371). After all thosse years of guilt, Amir repeats the words that Hassan had said to him. Passing it on to Hassan's son shows that Amir has atoned for his action. -
Obama Deploys Forces
Why delivering his speech, He annouced that he was going to, "deploy 30000 additional troops," (NYT, 4) -
Obama extends deadline
Although the aministration set its deadline for the summer of 2011, "the United States will have forcrs in the country until at least the end of 2014," (NYT, 4).
