Though Hassan's birthday in the winter of 1974 was the last time he would receive a gift from Baba, Baba promised that "this present [would] last [Hassan] forever" (Hosseini 46). Baba had given Hassan a procedure that would fix his cleft lift, and ultimately reveal the love between the two.
