Amir wins the Kite Tournament and betrays Hassan
In the winter, Amir wins a kite tournament for the first time with the sole purpose of making Baba proud. Hassan runs the Kite for him. Hassan is stopped by Assef. Assef and two of his friends take advantage of Hassan as Amir watches and doesn't do anything. This is how Amir betrays Hassan. Hassan always stood up for Amir, but the one time Amir had the chance to stand up for him, he didn't/ (Hosseini 77) -
Mohammed Zahir Shah is overthrown by Khan
Khan implements his system of the People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan. He replaced monarchy and named himself president. -
Amir discovers his love for writing stories
On this day, Amir was reading a book to Hassan when he decided to try something out. Amir started making up a story to see how Hassan would react. When Amir stopped reading, Hassan told him that it was the best story he heard. This sparked Amir to start writing (Hosseini, 30) -

Khan's changes to the government
Khan creates a new constitution that fives women rights. It also helps to modernize the largely communist state. He also forced many people who he suspected didn't support him out of the government. -
Baba and Amir flee to America
Due to the current war, Baba, Amir and a few others flee Kabul. Baba and Amir are headed toward America in hopes of starting over. -
Many Afghans flee the war
Due to the current war, many Afghans have fled their home country to get to a place that is safe. Most went to Pakistan and Iran. -
Amir graduates from High School
At the age of twenty, Amir finally graduates from high school. Baba is extremely proud of him and for his graduation gift, Baba gifts him a car. Baba tells Amir that he is, "'...moftakhir, Amir,' he sai. Proud. His eyes gleamed..." (Hosseini 131) -
Amir and Soraya get married
Amir meets Soraya at the flea market and falls in love with her. They gradually start to talk and eventually, Amir asks Baba to ask for Soraya's father for her hand in marriage to Amir. Amir asks Baba, "I want you to ask General Taheri for his daughter's hand" (Hosseini 161). General Taheri accepts and Soraya and Amir are married. -
Amir finishes writing his first novel
In the summer of 1988, when Amir is living in America, he finishes his very first novel. Six weeks after he wrote his novel, a man form New York offered to be his agent but Amir told Soraya that, "...just because I have an agent doesn't mean I'll get published" (Hosseini 182). This shows that Amir is working towards his dream. -
Bin Laden is considered a terrorist and the UN restricts trade in Afghanistan
By now, Bin Laden is officially considered a terrorist. Many people think that he is hiding in Afghanistan and secretly cultivating thousands of followers through training camps. The United States demand for him to be on trial for bombings, but the Taliban decline. The UN punishes them by -
Amir returns back to Afghanistan and searches for Sohrab
Amir receives a call from Rahim Khan wanting him to come back to Pakistan. Rahim Khan reveals to Amir what has happened while he was in America and who Hassan's real father is. His dying wish is for Amir to find Hassan's son and bring him to a safe place. Amir, overwhelmed with this new information must decide if it worth the risk, "and what Rahim Khan revealed to me changed things, made me see how my entire life... had been a cycle of lies, betrayals, and secrets" (Hosseini 226). -
Taliban destroy Buddhist statues
Despite global protests, the Taliban destroyed Buddhist statues claiming they are an offense to Islam. -
Hassan and Farzana are killed
They were accused of inhabiting a house that didn't belong to them because they were Hazaras. Hassan and Farzana were in Amir's old house. They took Hassan out into the street and shot him, Farzana came running out and was also shot, and killed. When Amir heard this news, all he could keep thinking about was, "...that day... in the hospital room, just after Hassan's hairclip surgery...Now everyone in that room was either dead or dying. Except for me" (219) -
Hassan writes a letter to Amir
Hassan writes a letter to Amir telling him about his life and how he hopes to see him again. He tells Amir, "If you do, [return to Kabul] you will find an old faithful friend waiting for you" (Hosseini 2180 -
Amir brings Sohrab back to America with him
After lots of paperwork, Amir is finally able to bring Sohrab back to America with him to give him a life he deserves. Amir and Soraya adopt Sohrab as their son. They are also reunited after more than 7 months of being apart. Amir notices that Soraya's, "...eyes tear[ed] over a little, I had a glimpse of the mother she might have been..." (Hosseini 358).
