Kite Runner and the History of Afghanistan

  • Amir is born

    Amir is born, but his mother, "hemorrhaged to death during childbirth" (Hosseini 6), leaving Amir with Baba. Amir grows up wondering about his mother and what she is like. He also feels his fathers resentment towards him for his mother, Sophia's death.
  • Hassan is born

    A year after Amir is born Hassan is born but his mother " ran off with a clan of traveling singers and dancers" (Hosseini 6) leaving Hassan with his father Ali, Baba, and Amir. Since both young boys do not have mothers and their fathers are raising them they grow as brothers.
  • Hassan gets surgery for his birthday

    For Hassan's birthday Baba gets Hassan a doctor to fix his harelip "Dr. Kumal said, my job is to fix things on peoples bodies, sometimes there faces.". After seeing Baba's love and caring for Hassan, we see his jealousy. This also show how much Baba tries to show his love secretly with Hassan.
  • Major turning point in Amir's life and relationships

    “I became what I am today at the age of twelve, on a frigid overcast day in the winter of 1975.” (1), On this day Amir won the kite running competition and watched Hassan get raped by Assef. This is a life-changing event because saw the abuse towards Hassan and did not say anything, which affected his conscience. Amir also made Baba proud by winning the kite running competion.

  • Amir ends relationship with Hassan not being a good friend

    “I turned thirteen that summer of 1976, Afghanistan’s next to last summer of peace and anonymity.” (93) ali and hassan left

  • Baba and Amir flee Afganistan

    As the war and Isis control gets worse in Afghanistan Baba and Amir decide to leave “As is you weren’t supposed to get sick when you were eighteen.” (111). The conditions in their home worsens so the both of them flee like thousands of other citizens. Amir and Baba have a chance now to try to redo their lives and leave the past behind.
  • Baba and Amir are now living in the US

    “That summer of 1983, I graduated from high school at the age of twenty, by far the oldest senior tossing his mortarboard on the football field that day.” (131).
  • Baba and Amir started working at the flea market

    “The following summer, of 1984, the summer I turned twenty-one, Baba sold his Buick and bought a dilapidated ’71 Volkswagen bus for $550 from an old Afghan acquaintance, This was the year Baba and Amir began going to the flea market.” (137) Amir and Baba live in the lower class in Calfornia, but make the best of it.
  • when Amir met Soraya at the flea market

    While Amir and Baba are working at the flea market Amir would walk purposefully past one booth"Would you like to read one of my stories?" (147) "I would like that" (147), When Amir met a young Afghani women. This event set Amir up for a lot of the love and pain he will feel in the next couple years.
  • Baba diagnosed with cancer

    Baba is diagnosed with cancer and is being his stubborn self "It means it wouldn't change the outcome, just prolong it." (156). Amir has to take care of Amir, so the two become very close. As Amir prepares to say goodbye to his father he is trying to atone for their rlationship.
  • Soroya and Amir get married

    "I rember walking towards the stage, now in my tuxedo, Sorarya in a veiled pari in white are hands locked."
  • Amir gets his first book published

    "There was so much goodness in my life. So much happiness. I wondered whether I deserved any of it." (183)

  • Sobrhab tries to end his life

    Rahim Khan calls Amir about Hassan's son and how Amir needs to go back. When Amir realizes Sohrab is his nephew he goes to rescue him, but while trying to bring Sohrab back to the States Amir tells him he might have to stay in an orphanage "screaming until [he] thought [his] throat would rip and his chest would explode" (Hosseini 343). Sohrab is very emotionally scared from his experiences. Rather die than the chance of happiness. This makes Amir in pain, because he is just trying to help Sohrab
  • Hamid Karzai elected interim head of state

    æLoya Jirga, or grand council, elects Hamid Karzai as interim head of state. Karzai picks members of his administration which is to serve until 2004."(BBC.com)
  • Sohrab is brought to the US with Amir

    Amir has finnally brought Sohrab to the US "Hesitated, he took the string" (369 Hosseini). Amir and Sohrab go kite running like Amir and Hassan used too and Amir tells sohrab the phrase Hassan told him many years ago. This is a scene of reconciliation and closure for Amir.

  • Backtrack- US stays in Afganistan longer
