republican presidential nominee Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky but eventually moved to Illinois. at 6 feet 4 inches he was usually the tallest person in the room. he was a selfmade man and was looked upon as an ordinary person. He was very honest and earned the nick name honest Abe. -

Maine becomes a free state.Missouri becomes a slave state. Split the louisiana purchase along 36 30 with the north being free and the South being slave. caused more division in the country, which helped lead to the civil war. -
1850 compromise
slaves had to be returned to the south by the northerners.
the compromise had 5 parts. on eof them being the settling of the texas new mexico border dispute. -
Uncle Tom's cabin
The book Uncle Tom's cabin was released enraging both the North and South. The book highlighted how the slaves were treated poorly. In the South state governments attempted to ban the book however people kept reading it. -
Kansas elections
popular sovereignty was used and elections were heald to decide if slavery should be legal in Kansas. however lots of proslavery southerners illegaly crossed the border and voted therefore making Kansas a slave state. -
harpers Ferry
an anti slave man by the name of John Brown led a group of led of abolitionists to take over the armory at harpers ferry. He was able take over the armory but only heald it for a short time before the towns people started shooting at him and his men. he thought that an army of slaves would rise up and start a rebellion because of what he did, the north praised him as a hero and the south hated him for it. -
Secesion
South Carolina was the first state to secede from the union. By late February 6 other states seceded. They met in Montgomery and in 6 days later they had already set up the beginnings of a government -
Fort Sumter
on April 12, 1861 at 4:30 am the South Carolinan militia started bombarding Fort Sumter. The fort held out for 2 days before it ran out of supplies and had no other choice but to surrender. This was the beginning of the civil war. -
Kansas Geurilla war
a posse of over 800 proslave southerners raided the town of laurance. they plunder and destroy several buildings. The towns people stood little chance of fighting off teh posse and this sparked a geurilla war in Kansas, lasted for nearly 4 months the most famous of the attacks was when John Brown beheaded 5 proslave southerners by beheading them with a broad sword
