Urbanization is where there is an increasing number of people living in suburbs/cities. It started around the time of industrialization and modernization. It was so then people could live closer to cities. -

Manifest Destiny is term used for white people to use. Manifest Destiny was believing that God wanted white people to take land coast to coast. This helped get rid of Natives land because White people would take it. -
Third Party Politics
This term is used to identify another party. They are not with the Democratic or Republic party. The term "minor party" is also used for this. -
Homestead Act
The homestead act was used to get people to the West. It was where people could buy 160 acres of land for $10. Though, they had to improve the land within five years or else the land would get taken away. -
Susan B. Anthony
Susan B. Anthony was active in temperance. She became an activist for woman rights. She was an advocate for women labour organizations. -
The Gilded Age
The guided age was a term used to call a part of the 19th century. The term was made up form Mark Twain. It meant that America was beautiful on the surface but corrupt under the surface. -
Industrialization
Industrialization was a term used for industrial growth. The growth was constant until the civil war. It was changing the way America's labour was proceeding. -
Civil Service Reform
The Civil Service Reform created the Civil Service commission. It ended the "spoil system". Most employees were on the merit system after that. -
Haymarket Riot
the Haymarket Riot was a labour protest in Chicago. At least it was before one of the protestors threw a bomb at the police. It made the organized labor movement weaken. -
Dawes Act
The Dawes Act was made to get rid of reservations. The government would give land to individual indians. The government would try to white wash the Native Americans. -
Jane Addams
Jane Addams was one of the co-founders of one of the first settlers the US . She was also a co-winner of a Nobel Peace Prize. She was the president of the International League for Peace and Freedom and the first female president National Conference of Social Work -
Andrew Carnegie
Andrew Carnegie owned Carnegie Steel Corporation. He invested in many industrial companies. He later made a university called Carnegie-Mellon. -
Populism & Progressivism
People who support the progressivism are mostly rich. While people who support populism are the general masses. Progressivism is wanting the government to make the society better while populism is wanting the government to make most things equal. -
Eugene V. Debbs
Eugene V. Debbs was the president of the American Railway Union. The union was made for people to get higher wages against the Great Northern Railway. He went to jail for leading a Chicago car company strike. -
Ida B. Wells
Ida B. Wells was born from slaves and was a slave herself. She led an anti-lancing crusade in America. She also founded the National Association of Colored Women. -
William Jennings Bryan
William Jennings Bryan ran for president three times. He was influential in many reforms. He spoke at a convention with his Cross of Gold speech. -
Klondike Gold Rush
The Klondike Gold Rush was where some men found gold in a river in Canada. It set off a big amount of people coming to dig up gold. Though people were unaware that most of it was claimed. -
Initiative & Referendum
Referendum is where entire electorates are allowed to vote on a proposal. Initiative is where the people propose laws. These were made because people had different views. -

Muckraker were people who were journalist, photographers, and authors. They would publish their works about the awareness of injustices. Their works caused reforms to be created. -
Theodore Roosevelt
Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt was the vice president of the United States. He became the president after the assassination of William McKinley. He also won the Nobel Peace Prize. -
Suffrage
Suffrage means for people being able to vote. The term is more familiar from the term "woman suffrage". It has helped define movements. -
Upton Sinclair
Upton Sinclair was a man that was a educated man who went to college. He was interested in poverty and things associated with it and he wrote a book about the meat packing business called The Jungle. His book informed people about bad meat and so they would have more knowledge. -
Pure Food and Drug Act
The Pure Food and Drug Act was to provide safe food and drugs for people. It stopped people from selling misbranded, poisonous, etc food and/or drugs. It was made the same day as the Meat inspection act. -
Dollar Diplomacy
Dollar Diplomacy was when William Howard Taft and Philander C. Knox would follow a policy that as called Dollar Diplomacy. It would promote America by giving loans to foreign countries. This was used with several countries. -
Federal Reserve Act
The Federal Reserve Act created the Federal Reserve System. It was made to create a central bank to keep America stabilized. It was one of the most influential acts passed. -
16th Amendment
The 16th amendment is where the Government collects income taxes from the country. It is so then the government can build things and fund armies and etc. It was first introduced ver briefly after the civil war. -
17th Amendment
The 17th amendment is where a state has to have two senators. They have to be voted by the people and be the senator for six years. They will each have one vote. -
18th Amendment
in the late 1800s there were places in America that were banning alcohol. The banning had to do with religion. It reached its highest when America passed the 18th amendment to ban the selling, buying, and consuming of alcohol. -
Nativism
Nativism was the protecting of people. The people expressed that they thought they were the real Natives. They didn't think immigrants should get protection. -
19th Amendment
Before the 19th Amendment was passed, the governments denied rights for women. It created woman rights movements. The 19th Amendment was the prohibition of the federal and state governments denying the voting of any sex. -
Tea Pot Dome Scandal
the Tea Pot Dome Scandal was a scandal of secretly leasing federal oil. The supervision of the oil was transferred to the Department of the Interior. Harry F. Sinclair was secretly given the rights to the Teapot Dome reserves. -
Clarence Darrow
Clarence Darrow was first a labour lawyer. He was a lawyer for a famous crime trial about murder. He was also in on the Scopes trial and was telling about his beliefs and non beliefs. -
Immigration and the American Dream
immigrants are people who come to a country (America) without it being theirs and/or having citizenship. The American Dream is where people who work hard can be successful. To some people, the American dream does not apply to immigrants, only to "American citizens".
