    The Princes Bridge was the first bridge to be constructed over the Yarra River. I chose this event because it meant that people could easily travel from the right bank to the left bank.

    Melbourne's first parliament house was officially opened on the 25th of November 1856. The State Parliament met here until federation in 1901. I chose this event because it meant that the parliament were deciding future plans for Mebourne's development.

    In 1857, the Queen Victoria Market was founded. It was siginificant because firstly it was named after Queen Victoria who declared Melbourne as a city and also it provided fresh food and general groceries to Melbournians.

    In 1859, Batman's Hill Station, formely Spencer Street Station and now Southern Cross Station was completed. It was an important event because it provided transport to and from Melbourne, so people could come and visit Melbourne and experience the culture first hand.

    In 1859, the Melbourne Football Club, the oldest fottball club was founded. This was significant because AFL is now such a big part of the Melbourne culture, with most AFL games being played in Melboune each week of the season including the Grand Final.

    1885, Melbournes first cable tram line opens in the cable tramway system. In 1906, the first electric tram service commened taking over the cable trams. This was significant because Melbourne is one of the only cities that uses trams as one of there major transport systems.

This was important because it symbolizes when Australia officially became a colony and its own country. Melbourne becoming the national capital was important as it meant Mebourne was the most suited city.

    The Fliders Street Station project was completed in 1910 after ten years of construction. This was significant because along with Southern Cross Station they are both the major stations in Melbourne that allow people to travel to Melbourne.

    The Melbourne Summer Olympics in 1956 began on the 22nd of November with the opening ceremony and finished on the 8th of December with the closing ceremony.
    This was a significant date as it was the first major worldwide sporting event ever to be held in Melbourne.

    On the 15th of October 1970, 35 construction workers died when a span of the West Gate Bridge collapsed. This was important because developers learned from this and then later constructed a more stable bridge.
