    John Batman landed in the Yarra River and discovered Melbourne, He signed an illegal treaty with the Indigenous Australians giving him 250 000 hectares of land. Three months later, another expedition led me John Pascoe Fawkner entered the Yarra River, establishing the first permanent settlement.

    The Hoddle Grid determined the placement of the main cirty streets, lane ways and buildings. The design which was created by Robert Hoddle, used a chain to mark out and designate block areas in the new town. To this day the grid is still very much in place and can be seen in a birds eye view.
