Dave's determination to play music: Industry versus Inferiority

Dave (age 10) has been playing the trombone and has been taught by his music teacher parents with encouragement. He has been working among classmates in band class. In Erikson's fourth stage, industry versus inferiority, the crisis is between growing close to other people while increasing skills and knowledge gained with encouragement (industry) and not receiving encouragement to gain skills and confidence, resulting in inferiority.

Dave's High School Graduation: Identity vs Identity Confusion

Dave (age 19) graduated from high school knowing that he wanted to be a musician in adulthood. He went on to study music in college. In Erikson's fifth stage of identity versus identity confusion, the crisis is between knowing who one is and what one is capable of (identity) and the inability to know who one will be come and what one's place is in this world (identity confusion).

Dave's Engagement: Intimacy versus Isolation

Dave (age 38) decided to propose to his girlfriend of four years while on a trip to Scotland. Dave and his now fiancé, Kellie, decided they loved each other and wanted to commit themselves to one another. In Erikson's sixth stage of intimacy versus isolation, the crisis is between deciding to commit one's self to a relationship to become closer (intimacy) and closing one's self off to everyone, retracting from anyone who begins to come close (isolation).
