  • 1788- The First Fleet

    1788- The First Fleet
    The First Fleet arrived in Sydney cove on 26 January 1788. There were eleven ships that were given the name First Fleet, that is why it's called the First Fleet because it was the FIRST fleet to arrive in Australia.
    This is significant because lots of people came to Australia on the ship and if they didn't come than we wouldn't be here in Australia now..
  • 1805- The Explores

    1805- The Explores
    The explorer Mathew Flinders argues that this new country should be called Australia. It was originally called Terra Australia Incognita. The name, Australia sticks with white settlers and it soon is in popular usage. This is significant because this is the name of our country today.
  • 1820- Catholic Priests

    1820- Catholic Priests
    Two Catholic priests came from Ireland to NSW. It;s the first time since 1804 that a Catholic mass has been allowed in public by a Catholic priest. The arrival of the Catholic priests is important because without them there might not be any Catholic religion in Australia.
  • 1851- Gold Rush

    1851- Gold Rush
    Gold is found in Australia. Many people from overseas want to come to Australia because the opportunity to become rich is very real. Gold brings riches to the economy and boosts positive lifestyles. This is a significant event in Australian history because it is the first time many people from overseas wanted to come to Australia and many of them stayed and became Australian citizens. They kept their money here in Australia.
  • 1854- The Eureka Stockade

    The Eureka Stockade also known as the Eureka Rebellion is a key event in the development of Australian democracy and Australian identity. The Eureka Stockade came about because of the goldfield workers. This event is significant because it stemmed from a build up of grievances on the gold field related to the licensing of mining permits and lack of political representation, and resulted in one of the greatest victories for equity and fairness in Australia’s history.
  • 1856- The Election

    1856- The Election
    Men have the right to vote if they pay rent or own homes. Governor and unelected councils no longer run the show. The four Eastern and central colonies-Victoria, NSW, SA, and Van Demeans Land which is now Tasmania they all become self-governing.The election is a significant event because men now have the right to vote for the politician that supports their needs the most. Men have the right to exercise their opinion so it will be fair and even.
  • 1859- Queensland became it's own state

    1859- Queensland became it's own state
    Queensland separates from NSW, becoming the only Australian colony to begin life with it's own parliament instead of first spending time as a crown colony. This is important because Queensland is independent of the crown and can make its own decisions.
  • 1860- Center of Australia

    In 1860 John Stewart reaches what he measured to be exacterly center of Australia.
  • 1864- Rail

    1864- Rail
    The first long distance railway reaches from Melbourne through to Bendigo to Echuca on the Murray river border in 1864. Rail is significant because it has made transporting goods and people faster.
  • 1865- Drought

    1865- Drought
    Devastating drought in Victoria and new south wales, cause increasing difficulty's for small farmers and bankrupt's many pastoralists in 1865. Drought is a bad thing and is still happening but it can be good in some ways such as some flowers cant open and properly grow in less there is a fire or drought.
  • 1864- Convicts

    1864- Convicts
    transportation ends, with the last convicts shipment arriving in western Australia. About 164,000 convicts were transported to the Australia colonies between 1788 on board 806 ships in 1868. To be punished in the olden days is a important thing because if you didn't get taught your lesion than these days there would be lots of bad and naughty people because they wouldn't be getting punished.
