President Lincoln's Inauguration
On this day, the recently elected President Lincoln is inaugurated. This event is key because President Lincoln did not tolerate with the rebel states succeeding, and he made that very clear in this ceremony. One thing that brought tension with this was that President Lincoln was against slavery, so the North and the South had different opinions and that caused some tension. -
Fort Sumter
The battle of Fort Sumter was the first battle of the Civil War. Both sides were fighting for Fort Sumter. The South, mainly South Carolina, wanted to defend Fort Sumter to prove that they were serious about the war. The North wanted Fort Sumter to show that they were equally as engaged. When Abraham Lincoln announced that he would be resupplying the fort, Anderson and his men first bombarded it, then realized they were outnumbered and surrendered. -
7 Days Battle
After Bull Run, Union General McClellan felt like his soldiers were not properly trained, and they should be more prepared before going into battle again. But Abraham Lincoln got sick of his armies not doing anything for a long time. So he insisted that they go into Richmond and fight. McClellan took 90,000 men with him into Richmond to fight. The Confederates only had 15,000 men with them, but because of the lack of speed that the Union went into Richmond, they gave the confederates the chance -
The Battle of Antietam
The Battle of Antietam is considered to be the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. Over 26,000 men are killed, wounded, or missing as a result of this battle. The battle officially ended in a draw. The battle only lasted one day. -
Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation was a speech given by President Lincoln which freed all slaves in the rebellious states. This was a huge part of the war because it lead to the abolition of slavery in the United States. -
Gettysburg
The battle of Gettysburg lasted for 3 days. On the first day, the Confederates outnumbered the union. By the second day, both armies were in full force and ready to fight. They both lost many soldiers that day. On the last day, Lee sent General Pickett to try and secure this battle. Over half of his men were injured or killed, and the Confederates were forced to surrender.
