Kansas-Nebraska Act

  • Compromise of 1850

    There 5 laws were passed in September of 1850 that dealt with the issue of slavery and territorial expansion.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    wrote in descriptive detail about slavery, and its negative effects. This came as a surprise to many people in the South, due to the fact that it was written by a white female. and it discussed anti-slavery ideas. For many, this novel was an opinion changer, but for others it fueled their fire to own and fight for the right of slave ownership.
  • Kansas Nebraska act

    The Kansas-Nebraska Act allowed the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide if they wanted to allow slavery or not. The Kansas-Nebraska Act sparked the conflict and divide between the Northern states free and the Southern states slavery. It caused an act of violence that would later lead to the Civil War.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Between the years of 1854 to 1861. In which was a conflict of whether Kansas would become a free or slave state. Then resulted in the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 called the "popular sovereignty" in which settlers would choose whether or not they would allow slaves.
  • Preston Brooks and Charles Sumner Debate

    whether or not slavery should continue to be legal. Sumner, from Massachusetts, argued that Kansas should become a non-slavery state, leading to him arguing for the overall abolition of slavery. Brooks argued back his beliefs on pro-slavery, becoming more enraged as the debate carried on. This eventually led to the beating of Sumner by Brooks cane. This attack angered those from the North, and created more of a sense to fight back.
  • Pottawatomie Massacre

    In reaction to the sacking of Lawrence (Kansas) by pro-slavery forces, John Brown and a band of abolitionist settlers (some of them members of the Pottawatomie Rifles) killed seven settlers north of Pottawatomie Creek in Franklin County, Kansas. This was one of the many episodes in Kansas preceding the American Civil War.
  • Lecompton constitution rejected

    When the Kansas- Nebraska act passed Kansas was allowed to determine whether they would enter the union as a free or slave . The Lecompton Constitution was created allowing for Kansas to be a slave state. pro slavery people supported by president James Buchanan attempted to push the constitution through the US It was set back to kansas for a vote, vote rejected it
  • Lincoln Douglas Debates

    Aug 21 - Oct 15 1858 Lincoln was anti-slavery, Douglas was for popular sovereignty.
  • Harpers Ferry

    The purpose of this march was in hopes of starting a revolt. Unfortunately, the U.S. marines shut them down within 24 hours, forcing them to surrender. This being one of the last attempts to come to an agreement somewhat peacefully shot down all hopes, therefore raising the question of war in the future.
  • Abraham Lincoln election

    Abraham Lincoln won the presidential election of 1860 in a four-way contest, he easily won the electoral vote over Stephen douglas.
  • John Brown Insurrection

    John Brown was taken after the raids and was to be executed on December 2nd. He was guilty of treason, murder, and conspiracy. Brown was set on believing he was doing what he was doing due to the will of God.
  • Secession

    The South Carolina Ordinance of Secession was the first signature act that would propel the United States into civil war.
  • Dred Scott

    Slaves aren't citizens and congress has no right to regulate slavery.
