Hassan was born
" It was there, in that little shack, that Hassan was born in the winter of 1964" (Hosseini 6). This is a really important event because this is when the long-term friendship of Amir and Hassan starts. This relationship is what a lot of the book revolves around. -
Amir wins the kite contest
" We won! We Won was all I could say"(Hosseini 66). Amir just wins the kite contest and this causes him to get Baba's respect. This is the height of the relationship between Hassan and Amir. This also causes Hassan to get in a lot of trouble a few pages after this event. -
Hassan gets Raped
" and the two boys separated, forming a half circle, trapping Hassan" (Hosseini 73). Amir was watching Hassan get raped and he sacrifices his relationship with Hassan just so he can keep Baba's happiness. Hassan ends up leaving after town because of this event with causes a lot of grief for Baba and a lot of guilt for Amir. -

This sets up the stage for Hassan and Amir to move to America where Amir goes to high school and majors in writing. -
Meeting Soraya for the first time
"I blinked, my heart quickening" (Hosseini 140). Amir meets Soraya for the first time and this is his first reaction of her. Amir spends many chapters talking about her and eventually get's married to her. This event gives Amir his first kiss. -
Baba comes down with a Terminal illness
" "'There is Chemotherapy of, course,"' he said. "'But it would only be palliative" (Hosseini 156). Baba is a huge part of Amir's life and him not being gone could cause a lot of things to go wrong for Amir. Baba is also very well known so it would be a great loss for the people that met Baba to deal with. -
Amir and Soraya get married
"'I want us to marry"'(Hosseini 165). A couple of months ago, Amir met Soraya and from that moment on, he always wanted to marry her. This gives Amir someone he can trust and spend the rest of life with. Congratulations Amir! -
Baba dies
"Baba never woke up" (Hosseini 173). As expected, the cancer caused baba to die but not before he left a lot of knowledge, respect, and maybe love with Amir. Without Baba, Amir will have to navigate life and work on his own which can be tough because there is mentor to guide you. -
Hassan gets shot by the Taliban
"'- and shot him in the back of the head"' (Hosseini 219). Amir just lost his childhood and closest friend. Now, Amir truly has no one he can rely on because Rahim Khan is also dying. Amir made a wrong decision back in the winter of 1975. -
Rahim Khan goes to find Hassan
" There were a lot of reasons why I went to Hazarajat to fin Hassan in 1986" (Hosseini 203). Rah Khan really wants to go find Hassan so he travels to Hazarajat to find him. When Hassan finally meets him, he becomes overwhelmed with joy but becomes very sad when he hears about the death of Baba. -
Sanaubar returns
" None of us had seen Sandbar since she had eloped with a band of singers and dancers in 1964" (Hosseini 210). Hassan is finally able to see his mother again although it happened in a very awkward timing. Hassan's son and Sandbar became very close and it tragically need with Sandbar dying when the son was years old. -
Mullah Omar hits 12,000 followers
The article says, " By the end of 1994 Mullah Omar had nearly 12,000 followers" (New York Times). -

Amir gets an appointment with Hassan's son
Amir says, " It was set then. Three o'clock" (Hosseini 273). This is very important because Amir came back to Kabul to find Hassan's son and bring him to Rahim Khan so he can put him in a better orphanage. This appointment gets him one step closer to doing that. -
Amir atones
" I became what I am today at the age of twelve, on a frigid overcast day in the winter of 1975" (Hosseini 1). Amir writes this book about his life before 1975 and this was the quote that made him do so. Amir returns to Pakistan and stones for the mistake he made to Hassan in 1975. -
Al Qaeda and Taliban get removed from power
The article states, " The 2001 invasion succeeded in dislodging Al Qaeda and removing the Taliban from power" (New York Times). -
Amir returns to Kabul
Amir describes it as, " Rumbles and Beggars" (Hosseini 245). When Amir was a kid, Kabul was a nice place where there were many stores on the roads with places to buy kites. This Kabul reminds Amir of how badly the Taliban is and how much the country of Afghanistan has been through. -
Rahim Khan calls
"'Rahim Khan is very sick"' (Hosseini 191). Rahim Khan calls Amir to tell him that he very sick and he wants Amir to meet Hassan. This causes Amir to go back to Pakistan because he wants to meet Rahim Khan before he passes away. Also, Amir thinks about Hassan and the mistakes he did to him. -
