  • Brown v The Board of Education

    Brown v The Board of Education
    Supreme court case against the Topeka Kansas school board, the court unanimously voted in favor of Brown that racial segragation in public schools violated the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th amendmant, overturning the ruling of Plessy v Ferguson which allowed segragated schools. Initially met with strong resistance schools did desegragate, a victory in the battle for racial equality.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Montgomery Bus Boycott
    In Montgomery Alabama Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat in the colored section of the bus to a white man, she was arrested for civil disobedience in violating alabam segragation laws. This act of defiance sparked a 13 month long boycott of all city buses. 40,000 african americans challenged segragation by choosing to walk instead of riding the buses. The bus boycott is what really got people involved and active in the civil rights movement and racial equality in the south.
  • Little Rock nine

    Little Rock nine
    On the first day of school nine black students try to enter previously white only Central high school in Little Rock Arkansas, only to be met by the national guard called in by the governor to prevent them from entering. After gaining national attention by the press Presedent Eisenhower sends in 1,200 members of the Army's 101st Airborne Division to keep the peace and escort the nine to school for their first day of school on the 25th.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    over 200,000 bllack and white americans gathered in D.C for a rally to advocate for the civil rights act which was in congress and to march on washington for jobs and freedom. At the foot of the lincln memorial Martin Luther King Jr. gave his iconic "I have a dream" speech. This is such an important date because of the speech that MLK Jr. gave, that became a sort of ideal of what the civil rights movement wanted to accopmlish; equality for all.
  • Civil rights act of 1964

    Civil rights act of 1964
    First proposed by J.F.K it prohibited discrimination on the basis of race, religion, national origin, and gender; ended segregation in public places and employment discrimination. One of the greates achievments of the Civil rights movement, legislation banning racial discrimination and public segragation.
