Singapore under British Rule
Governor was head of the British government in Singapore. The British government in Britain chose the Governor and all the British officials who would help him govern Singapore.The British was in charge of all government matters in Singapore. -
Japanese Occupation
On 8 December 1941, the Japanese dropped their first bombs on Singapore. Singapore was only captured on 15 February 1942 as they had to take over Malaya before reaching Singapore. -
Japanese Surrender
Earlier, two atomic bombs were dropped on cities in Japan. The bombs killed many Japanese and caused great destruction. -
Return to British Rule
Japanese formally surrendered to the British at the Municipal Building, now known as City Hall. -
Non-British Members Part of Government
Singaporeans were allowed to elect several non-British members to form part of the government. This was the beginning of Singapore's progress to self-government. Political parties started to form - Singapore Progressive Party (SPP) in 1947, Labour Front (LF) in 1954, People's Action party (PAP) in 1954. -
1955 Election
There were election rallies, posters and speeches to win the support of the people in Singapore. Many people were interested as they could now vote for more people to represent them in the government. -
The Hock Lee Bus Riots

Many drivers lost their jobs as they belonged to a union controlled by teh Communists. Encouraged by the Communists, they went on a strike to ask for higher pay and shorter working hours.
