When he was 14 years old...
When Joseph Smith was 14 years old, he wanted to know which church to join and, as a result, asked God in earnest prayer. In response to his prayer, God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph and told him that the true Church of Jesus Christ was not on earth, and that they had chosen him to restore it. -

Prayer in the grove
Joseph Smith went to a grove to pray and ask which church to join, then he says that two figures came down from heaven and appeared to him; One of them said, "This is my beloved son, Hear him!" -
Moroni
On the night of September 21, 1823, the angel Moroni appeared to Joseph Smith, telling him to go through the annals of prophets of ancient times and then translate them into English.

Marriage
On January 17, 1827, Joseph and Emma fled to New York and were legally married the next day in the village of Afton, living at their parents' home in Manchester. -
The book of Mormon
Joseph began translating again in 1829 and most of the current text of the Book of Mormon was translated over a period of three months between April and June of that year. During those months, his clerk was Oliver Cowdery, a Vermont schoolteacher who had heard of the Book of Mormon while staying at the home of Joseph's parents in Palmyra. Called by God in a vision, Cowdery traveled to Harmony to meet Joseph Smith and investigate further. -
Death of the prophet
The murder of Joseph Smith Jr., founder and leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, occurred on June 27, 1844. Smith and some of his followers were imprisoned in Carthage, Ill., The religious leader had sent Destroy the printing press of the Nauvoo Expositor and at the request of the governor turned himself over to the county authorities to deal with the allegations. In prison, a mob of armed men assaulted the jail, murdered Joseph and his brother Hyrum.
