Ten Years War Begins
This was Cuba's first attempt to become free from Spanish rule. Marti sided with the Cuban nationalists. -
Jose Marti is deported from Cuba to Spain
Cuban government deported Marti, after he began publishing a newspaper speaking against the government and Spanish presence in Cuba. -
Marti receives a degree
After being deported, Marti decided to further his education. His interest in politics sparked him to study law. He'd ultimatly finish his degree in 1874. -
Marti moves to Mexico
In 1875, Marti decided to move Mexico. This would allow him to again start publishing newspapers speaking against spanish impressanment of Cuba. -
Marti returns to Cuba
After being granted a general amnesty, Marti returns to Cuba where he tries to practice law. The government refutes his efforts and he ultimatly has to find work as a teacher. -
Marti is exiled again
After another failed attempt at a revolution, Marti is exiled again. He decided to move to New York City, where he could bring his ideas of revoltion in Cuba to Cubans in America. -
Marti became a delegate for Cuban Revolutionary Party
In 1892, Marti fulfilled his dream by creating a political party that would unite all cubans seeking independence. -
Marti dies
Marti died in 1895 at the of 42. He will forever be known in Cuba as a hero, for his efforts to free Cuba of Spanish rule. -
Last Attempt at Revolution
In 1895, Marti and a few former generals from the 10 Year's War left New York City to attempt a rebellion in Cuba, which was ultimatly unsuccessful.
