Jose De San Martin was born on on February 25, 1778. He was born in the city of Yapeyu, Argentina. His parents were Gregoria Matorras Del Ser and Juan De San Martin. -

Early Life
When Jose was growing up his father was a soldier. From 1785 to 1789 he went to Seminary in Nobles located in Madrid. But then went on to become a soldier at age 20. During this time the british captured him and held him for over an year. -
Getting Promoted
In 1804 he was made Captain of the Murcia Infantry Regiment. In 1808 Napoleon occupied Spain. He served the Sevilla Junta against the French who captured the king. Later he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. -
The treats of Peru
In 1812 had to organize corps of grenadiers against the royalists (who were spanish) in Peru. At the time Peru was threatening the government of Argentina. Many people were surprised that he changed his allegiance. -

Later Jose was recruited to the agency of James Duff. What was the 4th earl of fife. He was the reason San Martin was freed. -

The buenos aires government later made Jose an trainer and an leader for their soldiers. On February 3, 1813 he won an battle at San Lorenzo against loyalists. Then he replaced General Manuel Belgrano. -

The royalists still hed Lima so Martin wanted to reach the centre of viceregal. He first trained an army for the operation. While this took place he was also named governor Intendant in Cuyo. -

Going through the Andes
So Jose De San Martin decided they would go west through the Andes. Between January 18, 1817 and February 8, 1817 they accomplished this. They split up the army to guard all routes in the process though. -
Taking Santiago
On February his army defeated the royalists to take Santiago. Although it took him over a year to get rid of all of the royalists in the country. Then on April 5, 1818 they won at the battle of Maipu. -
Royalists capture Chile
Martin’s strategies were to take routes through the Andes. Then he wanted to go by water to attack Peru. But towards the beginning of this act the royalists recaptured Chile. -
Giving Peru independence
The next part in the plan was to make an navy. In the August of 1820 they landed in Pisco. At this position they could send threats to Lima on landward. Though they did not attack the capital because it was defeated by another force. After an year the royalist withdrew into the mountains and Jose’s army entered Lima. On July 28, 1821 Peru was given independence. Martin later died in 1850
