    Became head of Philosophy Department University of Chicago

    Once the head of Philosophy, Dewey established the laboratory school. this was a school where he could test his educational theories (Hildebrand, 2018). Exploring the concepts of a new curriculum Dewey sought to understand how children could learn more substance in their first three years of school rather than simply mastering symbols. this is important because it was the first time someone challenged the typical way of education and although the school was short lived it presented a new idea.
  • New School for Social Research Founded

    New School for Social Research Founded
    Dewey and several other progressive intellectuals formed a new educational institution known as New School for Social Research. here students and faculty could explore a new and more relevant model of education focusing on free thinking and idea exchanges of what problems are facing society (NSSR, 2021) . the opening of this school was in direct protest to the U.S. entering WWI and established a progressive approach to education transforming the ideas of social science and philosophy in the U.S.
  • John Dewey Society Founded

    John Dewey Society Founded
    The society grew out of several discussions held throughout 1934 and 1935 and although the Society was formed in 1935, it was not until 1936 that the name was changed to The Jon Dewey Society. The society was created to keep Dewey’s commitment to critical thinking skills in the search for solutions to critical problems within human culture and education (The John Dewey Society, 2021).
