    The earthquake hits and kills over 3000 people. It also started multiple fires that were way out of control.The estimated total was over $350,000,000 to clean it up.

    Du Bois and a group of African Americans as well as white progressivemen met in New York. They were talking about the horrifying lynching of two African Americans. This meeting Sprung the idea for having a National Association for the Advancement of Colored Poeple (NAACP).

    Going to the movies is known as the fifth largest U.S. industry. Movie tickets were sold for anywhere between 5 or 10 cents. This relativley cheap entertainment for the poor.

    A group of over 50 American Indians. Most of them were average middleclass men. They formed the Society of American Indians. This group was established to improve civil rights.

    The workers were just getting ready to leave when the fire burst. The entire eighth floor of a ten story building was on fire. Almost 150 people had died in this desasterous event.

    The congress sugguests the Eighteenth Amendment. This states that it will be illegal to manufacture, sell, or distribute alchohol. However it was not very favored and got repealed in 1933.

    By this time more than 50% of the population was residing in urban areas. The city was struggling to provide utilities for the poeple. Some reformers wanted to run a campaign to help with these problems.

    Ida Tarbell was born in PA in 1857. She was born into an idependent oil company. She was against Rockefeller who was buying up all independent oil companies. However thier company ended up going bankrupt.
