    The knocker upper was a job before the 1920's where you would be hired to wake people up in the morning. This job in was replaced in the 1920's by the alarm clock which was much more reliable and cheaper in the long run. Knocker uppers were quickly replaced by these little machines leaving many people jobless.

  • Hotel lift operator replaced by computer

    Hotel lift operator replaced by computer
    The hotel lift operator was a job where the man would pull a lever to move and stop the elevator. This required trained men because they would have to time the pulling of the lever so they would stop at the desired floor. This profession inst completely gone but is only employed by high end hotels. These workers were replaced by a computer that would stop and start the elevator on desired floors and implementing buttons that anyone could use to set there desired floor.

    Bowling ally pinsetters were often teenage boys looking to make money. In this job the boys would set back up bowling pins as well as send back bowling balls that were used. In 1982 they introduced a machine that would automatically set down new pins and send back used bowling balls. This machine made it much faster to set up pins.

    1980- Film Projectionist replaced by digital camera projectors
    The job of a film projectionist was usually filled by a teenage boy at the local movie theater. They would set up the film and make sure that is was all in working order to prevent the film from burning or the film being off centered. This job was replaced by a digital camera projector that didn't use film so there was no reason for anyone to be up there other than starting the film putting these teenagers out of jobs.

    2003 Switchboard operator replaced by automated switchboard
    Switch board operators were often women instead of men. Switch board operators would move switches from plug to plug depending on who the person wanted to talk to that was calling. This job was replaced by an automatic switch board that would automatically move you to the person you were calling instead of having to patch into an operator. This put many women out jobs and back into full time mothers.

    Cashiers are often filled by high school students. Cashiers scan peoples items and check them out at the cash register. Cashiers are still very prominent but many stores are implementing self checkout machines where people can scan there own items and check out using the touch screen in front of them. With the increasing numbers of self checkouts popping up over the years soon there might not be any cashiers left.

    Bridge toll collectors are people that collect the money that you have to pay to cross either with cash or credit card. This job is being replaced by computers that scan your car for a device, and if you have the device it will automatically charge it and you can keep driving without stopping. Most people prefer this method to the stopping and giving your change to the collector. This job inst completely gone but is constantly being replaced

    Amazon deploys 10,000 robots to keep up with black Friday. Now instead of people running around looking for items there are robots that carry shelves and if they contain what the person is looking for they will move to them. The robots could also help Amazon save $400 million to $900 million a year in so called fulfillment costs by reducing the number of times a product touched. These robots should really help amazon out against there competitors during holiday season.

    Factory workers are being replaced by machines and robots who will do the job to no wage. Many factory workers are paid minimum wage and work in harsh environments. Company are starting to see that employing thousands of robots is cheaper then employing thousands of people. With machines and robots you only pay one other then the occasional repairs and in the long run save lots of money. They also don't need light to work or air conditioning so they are the perfect workforce.

    In San Francisco the first fully automated restaurant was opened. This restaurant has no waiters or cashiers. This is a very scary thing for some people because this is just the start of a new era of technology. At this restaurant people use an I pad to order there food and then the food is assembled and placed in a shelf with the orders first name and last initial. The person is notified and then can go pickup there ordered food. This is the future of dinning.
