The Life of Yeojeong Yoon

  • Birth of Yeojeong Yoon

    Yeojeong Yoon was born on February 4th, 1939 as the third of seven children in a family with four daughters and five sons. Her name was originally Yeohyun Yoon, however, she was somehow registered as Yeojeong Yoon. Hence, since her name by law became Yeojeong Yoon but her family still called her Yeohyun, she used both names.

    End of World War II
    After the U.S. bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Japanese surrendered and gave up fighting in World War II. This act not only meant forfeiting in the war, but also meant that the Japanese would stop their quest to expand the Japanese Empire. Japan's surrender almost marked the end of World War II, for since there were no conflicts and tensions after Japan surrendered, there was no reason for the war to continue.

    Independence from the Japanese occupation
    Once the Japanese surrendered in World War II and the war ended, the Japanese also gave up occupation in Korea. The endless occupation that lasted for 36 years finally came to an end. Koreans were celebrating out in the streets, and putting up the national flag that had been banned for 36 years. People freely spoke in their proud language and called each other by their original Korean names. In this picture, Kim Gu, an important figure in the Independence Movement is shown.

    Beginning of Korean War
    On Sunday, June 25th, 1950, North Korea suddenly attacked the South. South Korea wasn't ready for the attack because most of the soldiers were home for the weekend. Many people say that the Korean War was an indirect extension of the Cold War, for the North Koreans that were supported by the Communist countries (mainly China and the Soviet Union) were fighting against the South Koreans that were supported by the U.S. This war happened due to political disagreements (democracy vs. communism).

    Overall, the Korean War left a great damage not only to the country, but also to the civilians and the soldiers' families. There were a lot of casualties and a large death toll. Pretty much everyone in Korea was affected by the Korean War in any way, which made this national event such a big and personal event for a lot of Koreans at the time.
  • High School Graduation

    On March of 1958, Yeojeong graduated from high school. This picture was taken around 1960 in the high school that Yeojeong graduated from; Daejeon Women's High School. In this picture, the principal is giving a speech to the students about liberation and freedom.
  • Birth of first daughter

    On May 8th, 1967, Yeojeong's first daughter, Ranjoo Chae is born. Yeojeong and her husband were living in Incheon, not Busan at the time. Ranjoo was born in a hospital in Incheon.
