Magna Carta
This was written by king to govern England and deal with its people according to the customs of feudal law. The reason for this was to try to keep kings from abusing power. -
Petition of Right
The Petition of Right was one of the major English documents that set out specific liberties of the subject of the king. Helped to control taxation without parliament, imprisonment without cause, and the use of martial law. -
English Bill of Rights
This was an Act that limited the power of the King and Queen of England by giving citizens certain rights that can't be taken from them. One thing this did was make it that the Crown could not interfere with law. Another is that they could not create new tax without asking Parliment. -
Albany Plan of Union
This was a proposal to create a unified government for the Thirteen Colonies. The plan was originally sugested by Benjamin Franklin. -
Boston Massacre
Incident on King Street which there were five male civilians killed and six other injured by the British Army Soldiers. This originally started with a mob of civilians harassing one soldier then eight others fired without being told to. -
Articles of Confederation
This event happened in York Town, Pennsylvania in 1773. It made the original 13 states officialy know as the United States of America. The main person in charge of this was John Dickinson. -
Boston Tea Party
The Sons of Liberty dumped tea off boats in order to protest the tax on it. This was one of the main events that led to the American Revolution. -
First Continental Congress
This was a meeting of 12 of the 13 Original Colonies in Carpenter's Hall. Another name for it is "The passage of Coercive Acts." -
Second Continental Congress
This was a convention that began to meet shortly after the American Revolutionary War had started. There were one delegate from each of the 13 Original Colonies. -
Decleration of Independence
This was the document that declared us seperate from Great Britain. We were a seperate nation called the United States of America. -
Shay's Rebellion
This was one of the first uprisings of all time that was against Massachusett's courts. George Washington had to come out to alter this rebellion at this time. -
Virginia Plan
This was a a proposal for a bicameral legislative branch. James Madison wrote the draft for the Virginia Plan. -
Philidelphia Convention
This was a major event which was also known as the Constitutional Convention. Gathered to talk about the problems within the US and how they would proceed to fix them. They decided to create a new government rather than fix the old one. -
New Jersey Plan
Proposal for the United States goverment that was presented by James Paterson in the Continental Convention. This was created in response to the Virginia Plan.
