Begining of Modern Jewish History
The beginning of Modern Jewish HIstory is with the excommunication of Baruch Spinoza in 1656. This is the start because he is the first Jew that leaves orthodoxy but is still a Jew. The beginning of Modern Jewish HIstory ends with the excommunication of the Hasidim by the Vilna Goan. This ends the first part of Modern Jewish History because we see the beginning of medern Judaism with Spinoza and with the Cherem of the Hasidim we see the beginning of the Reform Movement. -
Hasidism Begins
The Founder of Hasidism was the Baal Shem Tov. The Baal Shem Tov also known as the Beshet, came up with new ways to practice Judaism, and his ways were developed by his students. Hasidism is very spiritual and into faith. In Hasidism it does not matter if you can read Hebrew or not, as long as you want to make a connection with Hashem you are able to. Hasidism aimed at a psychological reform rather than a factual one. -
Haskalah Movement
Even though the Haskalah allowed Jews to integrate and assimilate into different countries, the Haskalah still resulted in the creation of a secular Jewish culture. The Haskalh is connected to the beginning of the REFORM movement which threw out the observence of Jewish law and focused more on ethics and morals. -
Cherem of the Hasidim by the Vilna Goan
In 1772 the Vilna Goan excommunicated the Hasidim. The Vilna Goan was the leader of the Mitnagdim (opponents). The Mitnagdim did not like how the Hasidim were subsituting prayer for dancing. THey also thought that the Hasidim were using their rebbe as a personal connection to Hashem, which led them to worship their rebbe. -

Political Emancipation in Europe
This is a huge section in Modern Jewish HIstory. The Jewish people are searching for a place that they can call home and they think they have found it in France. They are seeking Emancipation there but the French do not want them to because they think that the Jews are going to steal their jobs. Napoolean wants to see if they will stay loyal to the French Empire or if they are loyal to Judaism. He sees that they will be loyoal to him and he emancipates them. -
European Emancipation
In 1789 Napolean was considering whether or not he should let the Jewish people assimilite into France. Napolean had just created the French Empire and he wants to unify it under one system of law, one language, culture, and education. He does not know whether the Jewish people will stay Jewish Frenchmen or will become French Jews an obey him. HE sets up a Grand Sanhedrin and then in 1789 he emancipates the Jewish people. -
Napolean's Sanhedrin
Napolean had a difficult decison to make: let the Jews assimilate or do not let the Jews assimilate. Napolean was reluctant to let the Jews assimilate because he did not know how loyal they would be to him. To test the loyalty of the Jews he set up the Grand Sanhedrin, which had not been convened for 1800 years. The way that these 71 Jews would answer the question he posed to them would show if they were French Jews or Jewish Fenchmen. -
Reform Movement
The Reform Movement was started because people in the Jewish community wanted individual liberty. They did not want to be attached to all the laws a Jew was stuck with. Because of the Reform Movement Rabinnic authority was weakened, there was more integration into other nations, and religious observence became more lax. -

When Herzel finally realized that he needed to take action about anti-semetism was when he went to document the Alfred Dreyfus case. Alfred was a French Jew who was put on trial for spying agaisnt France. Theodore Herzel realized that this trial was not so much about a crime, but rather about anti-semetism.
