    Compromise of 1850
    The Compromise of 1850 was a package of 5 laws that were drafted by Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky. These bills were related to the issues of slavery between the "free states" and the "slave states". The Compromise was then made law by Henry Clay and Steven Douglas on September 9th and 20th, 1850.
  • The Publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin

    The Publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin
    Uncle Tom's Cabin is a book written by an abolisionist, Harriet Beecher Stowe. It is mostly about slavery, and was written with hope that it would change the society in that time, The book did give people a different persective on slavery, a good one, however it did have a huge impact on the Civil War.

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    The Kansas-Nebraska Act was purposed to be new land for settlements, farms, and possibly a new Midwestern Transcontinental railroad. However people had to vote whether they would be slave states or free states; the anti-slavery settlers eventually outnumbered the pro-slavery settlers and caused people to start the Civil War.

    This was another war, political and violent, between the slaveholders and abolitionists. It took place on the Kansas territory, where the Missouri Compromise was nullified, Eventually, Kansas remained a free state.

    The Brooks/Summer Affair was a violent incident that occured in the senate, where Preston S. Brooks hit Charles Sumners with a cane until it broke. This was a misunderstanding that was caused because of slavery.

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was a slave who became free once he got to the northern part of America (where people of African descent are no longer slaves). Scott tried to sue for his freedom in the Supreme Court. Because of this people of African ancestry, whether they're free or slaves, cannot become citizens of the USA. They made this decision to prevent any future complications like this one.

  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
    The Election of 1860 included the candidates- Abraham Lincoln, John Bell, John Breckenrige and Stephen Douglas. Abraham Lincoln was later elected president and he attempted to settle the whole slavery issue but didn't succeed. This was one factor that lead to the Civil War that occurred soon after the election.
