    The founding of Rome

    The founding of Rome
    arome i founded by Rolomus and Remus in 753 BC. Rome grew into a wealthy city because it was on the Tiber river.

    Rome becomes a republic

    509 BC The Romans revolted against their rulers the Etruscans.
    They threw out the last king. They replaced the monarchy with a new form of government a republic. In the republic people elected officials to run the state.

    Plebians secede

    In 494 the common people or plebians of rome seceded from the country after Rome gets invaded. The patricians cant win the war without them so they give the plebians more rights. They formed the plebian council. The plebians also were allowed to elect tribunes to protect their rights.

    The Punic Wars.

    In 264 BC violence broke out between Rome and Carthage. This began the first punic war. The battle was fought mostly at sea and Carthage dominated because of their navy strenght. The Romans eventually built a better navy and defeated Carthage.

    The MIllitary in Politics.

    In 107 BC Gaius Marius was elected consul. To get more people to join the army he lifted restrictions and let anyone join. Poor people began to pledge their loyalty to Generals instead of the army so they would recieve wealth that was plundered. The generals abused thins and used their armied to gain more power for themselves.

    The Social War

    Roman allies in Italy tried to gain citizenship into Rome. The senate refused and conflict broke out in 91 BC. This was called The Social War. The rebels lost but gained citizenship anyways.

    Civil War

    In 88 BC Lucius Cornelius Sulla became consul. Marius and his supporters tried to prevent hm from taking command. After the war Sulla won and became dictator.
