  • The King is Born

    On May 11, 1885 Joe "King" Oliver was born, in Donaldsville, Louisiana, United States. He was one a very significant cornet player, leading a classic New Orleans jazz band that began the movement of jazz. This man pioneered the use of mutes in jazz playing. Oliver was also a mentor and teacher to Louis Armstrong. He died in 1938.

    The Harlem Rag was the first song known with a ragtime composition. It was created by pianist Tommy Turpin.
  • The Birthplace of Jazz Bands

    In 1895 Charles "Buddy" Bolden created the first jazz band, in New Orleans. He was the "King" of the cornet at this time. His band's repertoire included Polkas, Quadrilles, Ragtime, and Blues.
  • Louis Armstrong is Born

    Louis Armstrong was born on August 4, 1901, in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. This man later becomes one of the most influential jazz musician players in history. He was the first soloist in jazz to emerge.
  • Recording the Magic

    The Victor label in New York recorded the first jazz record. This record is said to be the Original Dixieland 'Jass' Band's "Dixie Jass Band One Step" and "Livery Stable Blues." The record was released in May of 1917 and was an immediate success. They sold over a million copies.
  • The Lady of Jazz

    On April 25, 1917, in Newport News, Virginia, United States, Ella Fitzgerald was born. This woman will later become one of the most influencial jazz singers, being the first femal jazz singer in history. She also made history as the first African-American woman to win a Grammy Award. In all Fitzgerald won 13 Grammy's by selling more than 40 million albums of jazz music. Ella Fitzgerald died in California in 1996.
  • The Era Begins

    The Jazz Era began in 1918. This was a post-World War I movement that rocketed through the 1920's. From this jazz music and dancing emerged. The birth of jazz music is mainly credited to the African Americans, but both the black and the white Americans alike are responsible for its immense rise in popularity.

  • Rock out at a Jazz Concert?

    The Carnegie Hall hosted the the first jazz concert, organized by clarinetist Benny Goodman, on January 16, 1938. Jazz music had previously been played mainly in recital halls, so this helped lead jazz music to the mainstream audiences. This concert was also the first to have African-American musicians perform at Carnegie Hall.

    In Wilkes-Barres, Pa, in the Autumn, the first american jazz festival takes place. Eight bands attended for "The Cavalcade of Dixieland Jazz."
