This is the day Naruhito , the eldest son of Emperor Akihito , climbed to the Throne of Chrysanthemum , and it became the 126th. Emperor of Japan . Emperor Akihito abdicated on April 30, 2019, ending the Heisei period . Until May 1, 2019 corresponds to Heisei 31 and from that day it corresponds to Reiwa 1.
