In the early 1600s the Virginia Co. was set up. -
The settlement
3 ships sent by the Virginia Co. sailed into what is now Chesapeake bay. 105 Colonists aboard, sailed up a river that they named the James after their king. Along the shore they built the settlement of Jamestown. More than half of them died the first year. -
The House of Burgesses
Virginia's legislature called the House of Burgesses met to create laws. -
