12 Years a Slave
Solomon Northrup (Platt), was relocated to a different plantation for his "safety" according to William Ford. FACT CHECK: Edwin Epps held Solomon for about 10 years until he was freed. Connection: Northrup's book "Twelve Years a Slave" brought to light many of the horrors and atrocities done by slave owners and his own experiences while he was held captive. Rating: 5/5, the movie greatly portrayed the experiences brought up in the book, and the casting I believe was excellent. -
Lincoln
EVENT: On January 31st, 1865. The House of Representatives voted to pass the proposal for the 13th Amendment
FACT CHECK: The 13th Amendment was not fully passed this day.
CONNECTION: The 13th amendment which ended slavery gave way to many Civil rights movements and shaped society as we know today.
RATING: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ the movie was amazing, only reason it lost the 5th star is because it did not show the Gettysburg Address. -
The Lost Battalion
EVENT: US artillery fires upon US troops, killing several soldiers.
FACT CHECK: During WW1 with the limited technology and lack of computer targeting, friendly fire was a sadly common occurrence.
CONNECTION: The war changed the economical balance of the world, leaving European countries deep in debt and making the U.S. the leading industrial power and creditor in the world.
RATING: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ I feel the movie accurately portrayed some of the struggles of American Soldiers during WW1. -
Avalon
EV: The new K & K warehouse burnt down due to a suspected electrical fire on the fourth floor, causing thousands in damage.
FC: There is no document stating that the K&K warehouse described in the movie actually existed.
CON: The events portrayed in the movie brought to light many of the individuals who immigrated to the US in the 1900's types of struggles and successes, that they faced.
R: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Although this was a great movie, I felt as though the pacing was slow and it seemed to drag on. -
Red Tails
EVENT: Tuskegee pilots successfully escort American B-17's to the bombing target in Berlin.
FC: Approximately 1,000 B-17's and 575 P-51D's participated in the air raids above Berlin.
C: The heroic acts of the 332nd fighter group led way to many changes in racial requirements within the US Army.
Rating:⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ all thought the movie was great for the silver screen, I feel as though they took many liberties in the portrayal of the events. -
