Battle at Fort Sumter
Fort sumter was a garrison in south carolina that held amunition and supplys and lincoln wanted to restock it. The south did not want that to happen so they fought for the fort and took it. It was the battle that started the civil war which led to 620,000 americans losing there lives. The fort was not a major battle except that it was the first and made the north and south true enemys. Now Abraham Lincoln had a war on his hands and he was a new president so it was not going to be easy. -
Battle at bull run
The battle at bull run was the first land engagement of the civil it was near washington. The south fought and broke through union deffences many times the south won but could not pursue the union troops. The south won but not by much and were diminished so they stopped and the war would continue. The south now had a victory and would fight against the union for about four more years.This is a part of why we did not lose very soon is becuase we had this battle to combat the southeren troops. -
Battle at gettysburg
The battle at gettysburg was probably the most important battle of the civil war. The south was getting close to washington so lincoln found a general and sent him on his way to intercept Lee. Lee had a few vitories in the north so he pushed his advantage and during gettysburg was almost captured due to carlesnes. Lee was stopped here and his army was hurt and the north now could relax a little. Later this is where abraham lincoln would give the gettysburg address where the battle was fought. -
Battle at petersburg
This was a very long battle to take the city of pertersburg so the union could take richmond. It was about ten months of fighting the confederates and attacks and counterattacks. Lee later retreated due to the unions numbers which led to his later surrender at appomatax courthouse. there was later in the battle a crater becuase some mineshafts had colappsed becuae of the battle. It later was won by the union and right after they went and took richmond which was undefended and easily taken. -
Lincolns assasination
The day president lincoln was assasinated was a very sad day and one that will forever be apart of our history. John wilkes booth was angry about the war ending so he planned to kidnap and ransome off lincoln. But he later decided that instead of kiddnapping him he was going to kill him. He killed lincoln at fords theater while lincoln watched the play when booth came up from behind and shot lincoln. Lincoln was carried througout the nation on a train with his and his sons bodies. -
Gettysburg address
The gettysburg address was given by abraham lincoln and it showed that the north was still strong and that they would keep fighting. He aslo talked about the battle of gettysburg which was one bloody battle. He talked about the founding fathers coming here and about how we can never forget the soldiers that fought in gettysburg. He also talked about how the nation will not perish and that it will stay strong. This is one of the most well known speeches ever and it was not even the main event.
