  • Tariff of Abominations

    Tariff of Abominations
    The Tariff of Abominations was designed to protect burgeoning domestic industries by inflating the costs of imports up to fifty percent. It was desired by manufacturers in the middle and northeastern states. Southern states who relied on foreign imports from Great Britain called the decision an abomination, hence the name. The southern states feared that Great Britain would retaliate with another tariff of similar detail.

    S.C. Exposition & Protest
    At this time, many South Carolinians were on the edge of rebellion. December of 1828, state legislators asked Calhoun to write a justification for a state veto of the "offending legislation". In the draft, Calhoun described the dangers of the tariff and arguing that the tariff was unconstitutional. The state then added a few amendments to the Exposition. Four years after it was made, the state adopted Calhoun's nullification scheme, bringing a national crisis and was never used again.

    The Tariff of 1832 was a protective tariff passed on July 14, 1832. This tariff was to reduce existing tariffs created by the Tariff of Abominations. The effects of this tariff were a compromise but failed to pacify southerners, leading to the Nullification Crisis.
  • Ordinance of Nullification

    Ordinance of Nullification
    During a state convention, the state legislature of South Carolina adopted the Ordinance of Nullification on November the 24th of 1828. This declared the Tariff of 1828 and 1832 "null and void". This decision also forbade the appeal of any ordinance measure to the federal courts. It also made state officeholders, with the exception of the legislature, to take an oath of support for the ordinance. It also threatened succession if the federal government tried to forcefully collect tariff duties.

    Proclamation to S.C
    The Proclamation to South Carolina was a document to the state of South Carolina saying that "disunion by armed force is treason" and reasserting the authority of the Federal Government. South Carolina was not pleased and responded on December 20th, that they have the right to succeed as well as to defend themselves with force from someone using force.
  • Clay's Tariff

    Clay's Tariff
    Henry Clay wrote tariffs to make negotiations with the state of South Carolina and its citizens shortly after Jackson resigned as the president. These tariffs would gradually reduce the tariffs in the state for the next 10 years. He helped to avoid a serious confrontation due to South Carolina taking up arms and Jackson threatening to use force.
