Ivan hired secret police, called oprichnina, to kill nobles and people who disagreed with him in general. This was to make people follow Ivan out of fear. These secret police gained the land of the nobles they killed, and demanded that the peasants pay them lots of money. -

Ivan beat his pregnant daughter-in-law for wearing immodest clothing. Suffered a miscarrige. Ivan's son heard about this, and entered a heated argument. Eventually, Ivan decided enough was enough and struck his son on the head with his staff, dealing a fatal wound -
