Ivan the Terrible was born.
Ivan the Terrible was born August 25, 1530 in the Grand Duchy of Muscovy, Russia. He was born to the members of the Rurik dynasty. This event in history is important because Ivan the Terrible would later go on to lead a "Reign of Terror". He was the first Czar of Russia(Andreyev). -

In 1538 Ivan the Terrible's mother died. His mother was believed to be murdered by poison. This event is significant because it led Ivan to claim the thrown. It also led to later suspicion when his wife died(Rice, 23). -

In 1541 Michelangelo painted the last judgement biblical frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. This work of art was designed and realized by Michelangelo Buonarroti the Renaissance master in 1533-1541. This is a significant event because it is now one of Michelangelo's famous art works and is very commonly known ( Florence Inferno). -

Ivan the Terrible Ascended the thrown
In 1544 Ivan ascended the thrown for Russia. He would ascend the thrown because in 1533 his father died when he was only 3 years old. Then Elena Glinskaya ruled until she died in 1538 when Ivan was 8 years old. This is a significant event because this was the start or the beginning of his rule(Thomas, 153). -

In 1547 Ivan the Terrible is crowned first czar of Russia. In the same year he marries Anastasia Romanovna. This is significant because Anastasia Romanovna becomes a big part of his decision making in Russia. Also he used a new name for rulers of Russia to be called(Thomas, 153). -

Catholic counter-reformation.
In 1550 the catholic counter reformed. The council of trentmet met through 1545-1563 to discuss complaints about the church including it music. This event is significant because it helped more protestant groups to develop (Renaissance music). -

In 1550 the Renaissance art critic published "Lives of the Artists". He invented the genre of the encyclopedia of artistic biographies. This is a significant event because you were now able to get information on the artist you wanted(History of art timeline) -

Ivan the Terrible's wife died
In 1560 Ivan the Terrible's wife died. This was a hard time in his life. It was hard for him because she died suddenly just like his mother did. This event is significant because he now has nobody to help lead him towards the right decisions for Russia and it will suffer because to it(Thomas, 153). -

Ivan the Terrible disappears from Russia
In 1564 Ivan the Terrible disappears from Russia. He threatened to abdicate the thrown. The Muscovite's begged for him to come back. This is significant because when he disappeared it meant that the Muscovite's didn't have a ruler(Thomas, 153). -

In 1565 a castrations was growing as a way of music.St. Paul's dictum stopped women from signing and churches practices or in any common place. This is significant because it would preserve male singing voices(music timeline). -

Ivan led his oprinchnki troops against Novgorod
In 1570 Ivan led the oprinchniki troops against Novgorod. This would destroy Novgorod and execute several thousand inhabitants. Boyar's and other members of gentry period perished and some of them were publicly executed. This is significant because this episode of the oprichnina leaves an imprint on Ivan’s reign, causing doubts about his mental stability(Ivan IV). -

El Greco established himself as a religious painter.
In 1577 a Greek artist El Greco established himself in Spain as a religious painter. He would go on to paint many well known pieces today. His painting and sculpture helped shape the Spanish Renaissance and inspire various movements to come(history of art timeline). -

Ivan kills his son
In 1580 Ivan the Terrible killed his eldest son. There are two theories of what happened. One being that Ivan the Terrible was protecting his wife because she was seen dressed inappropriately and was killed. The other was that Ivan saw him as a threat to his rule. This was significant because it ended the Tsarevich reign (Thomas,153). -

Ivan conquered Siberia
In 1580 Yermak began his quest in Siberia.With 540 Cossacks , he started to enter territories that were dedicated to Kuchum. By 1582 Yermak was able to expand Ivan the terrible's empire east. This also let Ivan call himself "Tsar of Siberia" in his last year (Thomas, 153). -
Giambolongna creates a work of art
In 1583 mannerist sculptor giambologna creates his famous Rape of the Sabine women. This is a sculpture was 13 feet and five inches tall. This lead him to become a famous sculptor(history of art timeline). -
Ivan the Terrible died
In 1584 Ivan the terrible dies. He died due to a stroke while playing the game of chess with Bogdan Belsky. This event is significant because it was the end of his reign(Andreyev).
