Italian Unity Movement Begins
Guiseppe Mazzini started an organization, a Nationalist Group, called Young Italy. Because of the name and what his age was and his goal was, no one over the age of 40 years old was allowed to join Young Italy. -
Revolts Broke Out and Exiles
In 8 Italian state, revolts broke out. Mazzini was the head of a Republican Government in Rome for a short time before he and other Nationalist Leaders were driven away into exile. -
Sardinia Leads to Unification through their Prime Minister, Count Camillo di Cavour
Cavour wanted to take over northern Italy for Sardinia. While doing this he became allies with France, who then helped him control most of northern Italy and started the Italian Unification. -
Cavour joins forces with Guiseppe Garibaldi
Guiseppe Garibaldi had control of Sicily and was working with Nationalist rebels in the south of Italy. He then was able to get the voters to allow Sardinia control of that area. Garibaldi and his men were known as the "Red Shirts" because they all wore bright red shirts during battle. -
Taking over the Papal States
Italian forces took over Rome, which was known as the Papal City and was run by the Pope. The Italian government finally gave them a piece of Rome to govern that is known as The Vatican City. -
Events in Italy relating to our ideas of Nationalism
From what I learned about Nationalism was that it was taking pride in your country. However, during the unification it never looked like they were proud they just wanted more to rule.
