The Labour Union Movement
The next events of historical significance involved mass labour, poor working conditions and the advent of labour unions. Clement Payne, one of the country's National Heroes, who is best remembered for his struggle to help the poor working population of Barbados, was deported and this triggered 4 days of violence later known as the infamous 1937 riots. This kicked off a period of democratic growth and within a year the first labour union was launched. -
Women Gain The Right To Vote
Progress toward a more democratic government in Barbados was made in 1942, when the exclusive income qualification was lowered and women were given the right to vote. This was significant in the growth of the Barbados democratic society because it gave women an opportunitiy to vote and to become more politically involved. -
West Indies Federation Created
The British created the West Indies Federation with Lord Hailes as governor general. The federation lasted to 1962. It included Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad, Tobago and the Windward and Leeward Islands.The significance of this federation being created is it helps the country build a powerful connection with the other countries included in the federation. -
Independence Day
Barbados gained intertnal self government in 1961 and in 1966 gained full independence and retained its status as a Commonwealth country. Independence Day is celebrated on the 30th of November and also during 1967 Barbados joined the United Nations. This independence gained Barbados a democratic advantage of the countries freedom and liberty throughout the country and the people of Barbados. -
New Prime Minister
Owen Arthur becomes prime minister after his BLP wins a decisive victory in the general elections, securing 19 of the 28 seats in the House of Assembly, the lower chamber of parliament. The significance included is victory for the elections and a step up to being fully in the chamber of parliment which connects the country to the legislatures and brings higher improvement to their democratic society. -
Agreements with Caribbean Leaders
President Clinton signed modest drug-fighting and trade agreements with Caribbean leaders in Barbados. This event is significant to Barbados's growth in democracy because it makes Barbados build stronger ties internationally with the United States and relieves the country of crime by eliminating the drugs. -
Freedom from BPC
Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and Jamaica reported plans to establish the Caribbean Court of Justice in 1999 and planned to change their constitutions to free themselves of the British Privy Council. The effort was pushed to establish the death penalty by them trying to free themselves shows that all the countrys can control what they want to do and that each effort can be established in different ways of interpretation, the significance is every country was involved in the agreement. -
The Fight for no AIDS
In Barbados officials at a conference on AIDS in the Caribbean pledged $120 million to fight the disease, this helps with the growth of the democracy because by finding a cure for the disease there will be more health care opportunities for the injured people and less deaths. -
Labor Party Won Elections
In Barbados PM Owen Arthur's governing Labor Party won elections in a landslide victory that secured the party 23 seats in the legislature. The opposition Democratic Labor Party won seven seats in the 30-seat Parliament. This reveals that by increasing the amounts of seats in Parliment and legislation we can increase our laws to make our country more dependent and in control of our country. -
The First Judgement from CCJ
The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) renders its first judgement, covering a libel case from Barbados – Rediffusion Service Ltd v. Asha Mirchandani Ram Mirchandani (McDonald Farms Ltd). The case is a formal end of Barbados' 170+ year long relationship with the London-based Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (JCPC). This event is significant because by loosing the JCPC the country will not go smoothy as to having the JCPC. -
Approval of EPA
In Barbados 13 Caribbean countries approved a new Economic partnership Agreement (EPA) with the EU. This event increases the partnership of the countries in the Caribbean economically and internationally.
