  • British encourage Arab uprising against Ottoman Empire

    One of the most disputed aspects of the British involvement in the Middle East is the Hussein-McMahon correspondence between Sharif Hussein of Mecca, governor of Arabia's Hijaz of the province, and Sir Henry McMahon, British high commissioner of Egypt. Between 1915 and 1916, the two men negotiated terms under which Hussein would stimulate Arabs to fight back against the Ottoman Empire and enter the Allies in WWI.
  • Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire

    The Ottoman Empire supported the Central Powers while opposing the Allies during the conflict. The potential to free Arab countries from Turkish authority was seen by Sharif Hussein bin Ali, the Emir of Mecca and King of the Arabs (and great-grandfather of King Hussein). He trusted the honesty of British officials who vowed their support for a single kingdom for the Arab regions.
  • British Government States intent to create a Jewish Homeland in Palestine

    The Balfour Declaration, which the British government issued in November 1917, stated that it was in favor of the Jewish homeland in Palestine and contained the following statements: This is recognized that nothing shall be done that could potentially ruin the civil and religious rights of the existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, and the rights and political status enjoyed within any other country.
  • WWI and and the Collapse of the Ottoman Empire

    The Middle Eastern political landscape was dramatically changed during WWI. The Ottoman Empire has been losing territory for a decade, receiving the title "sick man of Europe." It lost all of its possessions in Europe well before and after the war, after aligning with the Central Powers which were defeated. With the names, flags, and borders taken from Europe, The Middle East became transformed into its existing form by the victorious Allies.
