Mecca
The time around Muhammad was born, Mecca was not in good standings. It was a place of trade and pagan worship. People would worship many different gods, even though the place that they worshiped at, the Kaaba, was created to worship the one true God. The city was run by men, women were of no such use other than to produce male children, drinking was a very heavily used in society, and there were many slaves still. -

Struggles in Mecca
Once Muhammad was visited by the angel Gabriel, he tried to preach his beliefs to the people of Mecca and tell them that their pagan beliefs were wrong. The citizens of Mecca shot him down and became hostile towards him and his teachings. After 8 years of conflict between Muhammad's fellow Meccans, he returned, bringing some 30 000 followers. The Meccans accepted his teachings this time, and soon after, Muhammad passed away, claiming to have fulfilled his purpose on Earth -

Hijra
After Muhammad had preached his teachings and got rejected, he was told to leave Mecca through the night. Luckily, he did because the Quraysh planned to kill him in the morning. After a long journey, he finally came to a place called Medina. He then created a mosque there. This was the first year that the Islamic calendar came to be.
