Expansion Project Developed and Approved
In 2018, the airport developed the expansion project, and it was approved by Dane County. The approval paved the way for everything that followed. -
South End Terminal Expansion
In June 2021, the airport announced its biggest expansion project in history, with a new south end terminal. Once the announcement was published, the Madison community was made aware of the future changes. -
Project Breaks Ground
In late June of 2021, the expansion project broke ground and officially began. -
Topping Out
With the placement of the last piece of structural steel on the new south end terminal, the expansion project reached the milestone mark known as "topping out." This is an important point in any project, and this was no exception. -
Flights Over the Isthmus
Due to the construction on the main airport runway, some flights were forced to fly over the isthmus en route to landing, a path not usually taken. This caused higher noise levels for those living on the isthmus. -
International Lane Closure
Starting in June of 2022, the International Lane at the airport was closed for construction and repavement. This made drop-off and pick-up more difficult for passengers, and the airport put out a statement that passengers should arrive 5-10 minutes earlier to account for delays. -
Halfway Point
In August 2022, the airport announced on its website that the expansion project had reached its halfway point. This meant the project was on track, and expected to be completed by the end of summer 2023. -
Flights to Las Vegas
In September 2022, the airport announced Las Vegas as a new destination. This meant passengers could fly to Las Vegas directly from the airport. -
Completion of Phase One
Airport officials have targeted completion of Phase One of the project, which is the building of the new terminal, for December 2022. -
Expected Completion of Project
The airport is expecting the expansion project and construction to be completed in its entirety by the end of summer 2023. This means both the International Lane and the new south end terminal would be fully operational at this point.
