Near Mittagong, NSW, the first attempt of establishing Iron and Steel smelting was made.

Second Attempt

The Victoria Iron Company opened in Victoria and was the second attempt at making a Smelting Plant.

Change of Name.

Jan 1, 1874

The Victoria Iron Company changed it's name to Lal Lal Iron Mining Co. Ltd in 1874.

Blast Furnace

Jan 1, 1875

The Lal Lal Iron Mining Co. Ltd built a small blast furnace that was in use until the . Iron Locomotive Wheels were made in the blast furnace.

Smelting Plant Closed

Jan 1, 1877

The Smelting Plant closed in 1877 because it was not economical.

Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited.

Jan 1, 1885

The first major Australian mining and steel production company was the Broken Hill Propreitary Company Limited, established in 1885.
