US relationship with Iran pre-hostage crisis
Fearing that the prime minister of Iran, Mohammed Mossadegh, was closer to the USSR, the CIA created an operation to remove him of power in Iran and replaced him with the Shah of Iran. After that, the US supports Iran by giving military and political power to them. With US help, Iran has enjoyed a period full of prosperity. -
Iranian Revolution and it's significance
Many people were growing upset over the fact that the shah was distributing wealth unfairly & that there was too much western culture. This led to a confrontation between the Islamic clergy & the Shah in 1963. After this, SAVAK or the Shah's secret police were sent to silence rebels which led to protests breaking out because they thought that the Shah's rule was "Anti-Islamic". In consequence, a revolution broke out in Iran in January 1979 which led the Shah to be exiled. -
Hostage Crisis
The Shah of Iran was suffering from cancer, so the US gave support to help him get the treatment he needed. However, the Iranian leaders were very upset about the fact that the US helped the shah when the Iranians were trying to have him killed for his criminal activities in his home country. -
Post hostage crisis relationship with Iran
After the Hostage crisis, the US cut off all ties with Iran. They cut off all financial assets they owned in the US, they cut off all export or import goods to and from Iran, and with the help of the UN, other nations stopped trade with Iran.
