Many tales, such as Icarus were about flying or humans being able to fly with bird-like wings. -

Middle Ages
Tales of flying people were still told, and drawings of flight spells could be found. A monk named Eilmer of Malmesbury even tried making wings of chicken feathers and flying off of the top of a castle. Flight had not yet been achieved. -

Da Vinci had over 200 drawings and schematics of a flying machine called an ornithopter. -

Hot air balloon
The first hot air balloons were created by Pilatre De Rozier, the first flight only lasted 15 minutes. Balloons were planned to be used by Napoleon in his failed invasion of Britain. -
Invention of Flight
The Wright brothers made a plane and tested it at Kitty Hawk, the plane flew for 12 seconds. -
First Flight across English Channel
On July 25, 1909, Louis Bleriot Flew across the English Channel. -

Planes started to be used in war in dogfights, or as scouts. Aces such as The Red Baron started to appear.
