Into the Wild: Chris McCandless's Journey

  • Chris gets dropped off at Stampede Trail

Jim Gallien gives Chris his boots and reluctantly drops Chris off at Stampede Trail, deep in the wilderness of Alaska. Chris Mcandless's two year journey was finally complete. He plans to survive out in the Alaskan wilderness, all by himself with no phone, clock, or map. He believes that this will make him a man by killing the materialistic need within him. Jim is the last person Chris will ever see.
  • Chris Finds the Bus

Chris finds an old bus twenty miles away from where he was dropped off. He uses this bus for shelter from now until his death.
  • Chris's Food Troubles

Because of the snow, Chris struggled to forage plants and berries, forcing the amateur survivor to hunt. The only things he would kill and eat from now until May 9th would be a squirrel and a spruce grouse. The snow would soon melt, revealing all sorts of plants for him to eat. He will also become a skilled hunter as time goes on.
  • Chris climbs the Butte

Chris climbs the 3,000 foot Butte giving him a beautiful view of the Alaskan Range. This is a huge morale boost for Chris. He writes "CLIMB MOUNTAIN!" in his journal joyously.
  • Chris Kills a Moose

Up until now, Chris was only killing small game. The moose he killed is Chris's biggest kill. He will try to preserve the meat by smoking it, but he fails and will have to throw away a significant amount of meat. He feels awful for killing the moose and wasting so much of it.
  • Chris attempts to return to Civilization

Chris begins to crave human contact, writing, "HAPPINESS ONLY REAL WHEN SHARED." He heads towards Healy, but melting spring snow causes the Teklankia River to be way too dangerous to cross. He instead waits for the river to calm down. Chris begins to lose his cool and fears for his life.
  • Chris falls ill

When Chris ate poisonous potato seeds, he became extremely ill and began to suffer from indigestion and soon becomes too sick to hunt. He will make many signals asking for help but he will not be saved.
  • Day 100

Today was Chris's 100th day in the wild. He is in extremely poor condition and scared, but is extremely excited and proud of himself.
  • Chris Dies

Chris finally dies of starvation. On a sheet of paper, Chris says,"I HAVE HAD A HAPPY LIFE AND THANK THE LORD. GOODBYE AND MAY GOD BLESS ALL." He takes one last picture, holding his note with a huge smile on his face even though he looked extremely malnourished.
  • Moose hunters find Chris's Remains

Six Alaskan hunters find Chris's remains in the bus. A police helicopter picks up the remains. According to the autopsy, his body weighed 67 pounds.
