Into the Wild

  • Graduates High School

    Chris graduated from Wilbert Tucker Woodson High School. That summer he traveled all over and returned only two days before he started college at Emory.
  • Graduates Emory University

    He graduated from Emory in Atlanta and then shortly after graduating he donated a healthy amount of money to charity fighting against hunger.
  • Abandonment

    Chris decided to start anew and abandoned his car. He also changed his name to Alexander in the summer of 1990.
  • Canoe Life

    Chris canoes on the Colorado River. In January he abandoned the canoe due to weather conditions. He had not spoken to or seen anyone in a few weeks.
  • Viva Las Vegas

    February 24 1991 - May 10 1991
    Chris lived in Las Vegas with nothing on him. In the time there he worked in a restaurant.
  • Franz gets told Chris aka "Alex" is dead

    Ron picks up two hitchhikers. In the car ride Ron shares about Chris one of them then informs him that his friend was found dead.
  • Mr.Franz

    January 1992 - February 1992
    Chris meets Ron and lives with him, he taught him how to work. Ron dropped him off March 14, 1992 at Grand Junction for his journey north.
  • Hello Alaska

    Chris got a ride that took three day by a man the name of Gaylord. Once there he spend a few days in town to prepare for his hike to "the bus".
  • "Into the Bush"

    Chris walks to the “magic” bus where he stayed. This bus had been abandonded it belonged to the city of Fairbanks, Alaska. The bus is still there many people visit the bus in honor of Chris and his journey.
  • "Out of the Bush"

    To get out he would have had to cross the Teklanika River to get to town. Chris was not able to leave because the Teklanika River was flooded so it was uncrossable. So he goes back to the bus to attempt to survive starvation.
  • Death of Chris

    There were a number of reasons for Chris's death. He died because of starvation. He also died because of a plant that he was eating at the time. His body was recovered in a decomposing condition. Chris was only twenty four when he died and spent about one hundred thirteen in the wilderness.
  • Body recovered

    His body was found by hikers then brought back to Fairbanks. The corpse was decomposed and only weighed about 77lbs.
  • The whole story

    Jon Krakauer publishes article about Chris. After this he became interested in him and this then lead to him wringing and publishing "Into the Wild".
  • Family time

    Christopher McCandless's family visits the bus where he died and placed a plaque there in memory of their beloved son.
  • The story continued

    A movie based on the book and story of Chris was released and was successful.
