The Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik I, the worlds first artificial satellite. -
ARPA is created
President Eisenhower created the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), in response to the Soviet launching of Sputnik 1. This was in hopes to gain a technological lead over the USSR. -
ARPANET
The first message sent over the ARPANET was from Leonard Kleinrock's UCLA computer by student programmer Charley Kline at 10:30 pm on October 29, 1969, to the second node at Stanford Research Institute's computer in Menlo Park, California. -
Connection of 3 networks
a three network demonstration was conducted including the ARPANET, the SRI's Packet Radio Van on the Packet Radio Network and the Atlantic Packet Satellite network to share information back and forth. -
Public Internet use
The Internet makes a transition from government use to public use as "The World" was the first commercial dialup Internet Service Provider created. The first customer logged on in November 1989. -
World Wide Web
The World Wide Web, created by Tim Berners-Lee, was released to the public in August 1991. The World Wide Web or WWW is an information space where documents and other web resources are identified by URLs, interlinked by hypertext links, and can be accessed via the Internet. -
Mosaic Web Browser
At the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) located within the University of Illinois, Mark Andreessen and Eric Bina create the Mosaic browser, which helped to popularize the World Wide Web among the general public.
