    ARPANET was the precursor to the Internet. ARPANET was a network created by the United States Defense (ARPA). Established in 1969. ARPANET was like a testbed for network technologies. The idea of this was to try and link networks and computers together.

    Tim Berners-Lee developed the Wolrd Wide Web (www.) in 1991. It is a system of interlinked hyper text documents accsessed via the internet. It allows users to view web pages, that contain , text, pictures, videos and other multimedia through hyperlinks and buttons.

    The first search engine was W3Catolog in 1993, it is now inactive. Since then their has been about 60 different engines. The most used search engine is Google.
  • First widely used browser

    Mosaic was the first widely used browser, this gave the internet publicity and made using the web easier for users.
  • Online banking

    Online banking enables people to manage their finances via the internet, this includes paying bills, bank transfers aswell as applying for loans. The first ever internet banking to be set up was by Stanford Federal Credit Union in 1994. This first online banking set up in the uk was by the Bank of Scotland for NBS 1983
  • World internet in daily use

    in 1996 the world internet was in daily use. This means that people around the wolrd were using the internet however it was less than 10 million

  • Dotcom bubble burst

    Dotcom bubble burst refers to when lots of investors invested in the Internet, however the buble burst and market values of companies plummeted after souring since 1998.
  • Facebook launched

    Facebook launched in Febuary 2004. It now has over 1 Billion users, and had a reveneue of 3 Billion in 2011. Facebook is free to use however Facebook make a revenue of 5 billion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook). A majority of this is from businesses advertising on Facebook.

    Youtube launched 14th of Feb 2005. It allows the general public to share, upload and watch other peoples footage. it is now owned by Google who bought it for £1.56 Billion. Youtube played an important role in the development of Justin Bieber. He used YouTube to upload his music. He then was noticed and signed to a label
