Canada joins United Nations
The United Nations is an international organization that aims to facilitate cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights, and achievement of world peace. Currently, there are 193 member states. -
U.N countries sign Declaration of Human Rights
Proclamation of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, of which Canadian John Peters Humphrey is the primary author. It consists of 30 articles which have been elaborated in subsequent international treaties, regional human rights instruments, national constitutions and laws. -
NATO is created
NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It is an intergovernmental military alliance signed on April 4th, 1949.The NATO treaty marked a new era of ties with the United States and of distance from Great Britain and spelled out the significance of economic collaboration. -
Canada sends troops to Korean war
The first Canadian Troops enter Korea, thereby joining the Korean War and supporting the United Nations. In all some 25,000 Canadians served in the war; over 300 died and 1143 were wounded. -

Canada signs the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, committing to cut its emissions to 6% below 1990 levels by 2012. This is done to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, in order to control climate change. -
