  • School recieves Referal Request for further testing

  • Period: to

    Scheduling an IEP meeting

    After the referral is received by the school the school district must respond and schedule an Individual Education Plan (IEP) meeting within 15 days.
  • Period: to

    Notify parents of IEP meeting

    School must notify parents of IEP meeting 10+ days before meeting.
    The 10 day notice may be waived at the parents discretion if they want to meet sooner.
  • Period: to

    Period to schedual formal testing

    If the meeting determines that the child needs to be evaluated for possible special education, the testing must be completed within 45 days by experienced professionals. This is the evaluation stage.
  • Deadline for school to submit findings of IEP meeting

    The school must deliver the results and recommendations produced at the meeting within the 15 day window from the initial referal
  • Period: to

    Additional time for testing w/ parental approval

    The parents may grant the school an additional 15 days if needed for testing.
  • Period: to

    determination of eligibility or disability

    Within 30 days of expert evaluation Based on the expert’s analysis, the IEP team will determine the type of disability category the child falls into.
  • Period: to

    Determining appropriate accomodations and placement

    The next step IEP development is the stage where they determine the appropriate accommodations. This meeting also typically includes determining the placement of the child. It is their job to place the child in the least restrictive environment that meets the requirements of their IEP. These 2 steps must be completed within 30 days of the child being diagnosed with a disability.

    Ongoing review

    The last step in the process is the ongoing review. This process includes at a minimum an annual review of the student’s IEP. More frequent reviews of the IEP may be conducted if any member of the IEP team has concern about the child’s progress.
